Covington Catholic 2 Highlands 1 (PK's)

CCH survives what is probably their worst outing of the year by advancing in PK's. Litzler, Wessels, Day and Vogt convert to help the Colonels advance. Sam Romes stones the last Highlands shooter to clinch it. CCH very lucky tonight. No area of the team played well but they are moving on.

Yep, win (ugly) and advance. CCH did not play well, little possession, way to much the big ball. HHS goal was questionable, ball hit the bottom of the crossbar and came out. The AR was a good 12+ yards up the field, no way he can see if the whole ball crossed the goal line. If the ball bounces out after hitting the bottom of the cross bar and you're 12 yards up the field no way you call that a goal. It the end it makes no difference, win and advance.

A little press for the players......CCH goal was by Nick Jacobs........sorry, didn't catch the HHS player name........someone please update.....

If it was a goal at all that is. The A/R was badly out of position and no way should have made that call. The center was the worst I've seen this year and I have made very few officiating comments all year.

But in the end, the poor level of play was the real issue for CCH. They were tight, nervous and played not to lose instead of playing to win, but at crunch time, they got it done.

Gish. Highlands goalie played lights out in the 2nd half and OT. CovCath looked very dangerous until it came to finishing. Heading would be on the menu at practice I will assume. I say that but they would have had one go in if not for a good clearness on a corner. HHS was able to clear a second sure goal later in the half. Tough to play so defensively for 90 minutes, but they almost pulled it off.

Agreed. The finishing and composure for CCH was just not there tonight. So many wasted chances and simple plays. Highlands keeper did well to keep it at 1 goal and some help from his defenders. Curious decision to put a new keeper in for PK'S.

That is kinda different. Can anyone speak to why they would put a different goalie in for PKs?

HHS has two good keepers (both Juniors) who support each other. My understanding is that the keepers had worked it out ahead of time, confirmed before the shootout, and coaches were in agreement. Sounds reasonable to me.

Bad time to play this poorly? Most teams peak at the end of the season and ride the momentum.... hate to say it but should we expect a typical CCH early exit?

I don't think that will happen. I expect to see a Ryle/Cov Cath final. They are the two best and overall quickest teams in the 9th region.

Boone could have done this also since both of their keepers were excellent. I didn't know Highlands was similarly situated. It is a luxury to have keepers you are equally comfortable with in do-or-die situation.

The HHS keeper during the game was aggressive and confident. Made some nice plays. The HHS keeper during the pks seemed to be quicker, with longer arms and more athletic. He guessed correctly on every attempt and did get a piece of one....hard to say, but not sure any keeper at this level gets to the shots. Similar to the first HHS shot......upper v with pace.

Very often a team that has "their worst outing of the year" is because of the opponent they play. Is that true in this one? Did CCH look bad because Highlands made them look bad?

I would say nerves at first, but then finishing......I didn't count, but I would say that CCH had 10 corners is a low number.

I'd say a combination. It took everything HHS had, plus a little luck, plus poor finishing on the part of CCH for the game to get to PKs.
