Campbell County Football

Featured Replies

The Red Devils had only 30 or so kids on the team. Only 8 or 9 of those kids were 8th graders and only around 5 of those kids went on to Campbell County. I think the stong turnout has more to do with Middle School program and the overall growth of Southern Campbell County.

There is that pandora's box we discuss from time to time.... better known as open enrollement. He could go somewhere else if his parents are so inclined. Not saying he is, I know nothing about the young man, it's just that in Kenton County, you should count your chickens untill they hatch.:D

I'm guessing, SM32, that some Scott and SK supporters would find it humorous that a Dixie guy is commenting on the dangers of open enrollment.;)

You cannot comment without giving credit to Schlarman and his staff's tenure at CCHS. They got the ball rolling with some enthusiasm ,excitement, and discipline. Coach Culp cannot be ignored either. He's a force in all of Campbell County when it comes to football. Coach Styer's success and his ability to quickly jump in and keep moving the needle the right way along with the other two factors mentioned is why CCHS is excited about football again.

Coach Kulp has influenced all divisions, not just the seniors, and where do you think alot of those kids came from on the middle school team? I would bet quite a few had previously played for the Red Devils at one time or another.

My guess would be very few. He was involved with the varsity team in the mid-nineties teams also and I never heard anyone say he was the reason they were playing.

I can't give him much credit because he left and went to a 2A school. CCHS has never been as bad as they were under Corson and whoever replaced him was going to do a better job.

What does this mean? That same 2A school put up about 7 TD's on Campbell in a passing league last week.

Schlarman did a great deal for the players at Campbell. Some old assistants that went on to other schools were still helping Campbell kids try to get into college to play football at the end of this season. Schlarman is at a better place now and I am sure he is happier. I would say the fact that they are getting field turf speaks volumes of the support that Newport has for competitive athletics. Where at Campbell the football team is no more important than the science club. But congratulations on having 75 kids come out for freshmen football, Campbell needs all the help they can get.

You took that completely wrong. Newport isn't exactly a power house either, and 2A is hands down the worst division in the state. Leaving a 4A job for a 2A job would normally be looked upon as a bad move, but obviously athletics at CCHS are a second priority. Leaving for a 2A school IMO was a slap in the face to his players that played last year.

Its a shame that they took it as a slap in the face. Knowing John well, I'm sure that's not what he intended. His leaving had nothing to do with the kids, but rather the support (or rather, the lack of support) given to him by the administration. Its arguable that John's leaving could turn out to be the best thing that's happened to Campbell football in a long time if it forces the administration to realize that athletics can go a long way to build community support for a school district but in order for athletics to do so, the administration must support, with more than lip service, the coaches and players. Let's hope the administration learned the lesson and they give Coach Steyer the support he needs to return the Camels to their winning ways, year in and year out. If not, the enthusiasm that was started by Schlarman and has continued under Steyer will soon peter out.

I would rather be 11-2 and lose to two state champions than 5-5 ANYDAY of the week.

If this is true, then where was the school leadership to make a change. The old superintendent took a lot of heat for doing this. Since then athletics at campbell is very positive. Sounds like a lot of good came out of the controversy of a few years ago.

They axed everyone and it was still wrong. A group firing of educators. Of course he took heat it was an unprofessional way to handle the situation and IMo he made some bad choices. I'm not going to discuss it further because its been discussed several times before and that isn't our topic. Corson was not doing what it took to be effective at a 4A school. Before him Goetz had success at CCHS. However, varsity football at CCHS was struggling. When he left and Corson replaced him they had about 45 kids dressing varsity. That's barely enough to have an effective practice. They ran less and lifted less than they did under Goetz. IMO Troy Styer is a great fit. He's a Camel through and through. He cares about the program and the kids and he knows pretty much about football. I think 75 freshman coming out next year is a reflection of the young coaching staff, the middle school and Red Devil programs, and believe it or not I think the recent Bengal success has got a lot of these kids interested in football.

When I played at CC there were at least 15-20 kids who did not play football that would have been starters as sophomores. Had those kids played we could have had a very very good team opposed to a pretty bad one.
