Special Olympics

Featured Replies

Jamaal Charles, RB for the Kansas City Chiefs won 2 gold medals when he was younger in the special olympics.

He had a learning disorder. When he was 10 he had trouble reading so he was able to enter the special olympics because of that.

Anyone else have a problem

With that? Just curious.

Not even remotely.

If it meets their requirements, why would you take issue with it?

Do they have levels of competition?

Not that I know of.

I think they do in some sports.

I have officiated state basketball qualifiers and I am 99% sure there were two levels.

In HS we had to do so many # of service hours a year to pass. One thing I always did was Special Olympics. One year the kid I was with had ADD. Needless to say this young man left with like 10 gold medals. He raced and jumped against kids in wheelchair and others with down syndrome kids missing limbs. I felt a little strange about it.

That's my point. When I was in the military I volunteered at 2 special olympics and they didn't have different levels in the track and field events I did.

I just think it's wrong unless you are handicapped or mentally disabled. Learning disability should not qualify you to participate. J Charles reminds me of the movie The Ringer.

Special Olympics: Divisioning

It looks like they do have divisions.

There weren't when I worked it but then again that was over 30

Years ago.

Reading the link it makes it sound as if divisions are only ifnyounhave enough qualified contestants to participate at that division. I doubt there are a lot of kids participating to fill a division of those who have trouble reading.

I never got the impression the Special Olympics were about winning.

(Although I once had a brother of a player come out of the stands to remind me that the foul count was one-sided.)

My company was an official partner of the 2015 summer games. They had over 6,500 participants. I'm assuming there were many divisions.

Wish I could have been there to help out.

It's one of the highlights of my year when I get the chance to help out. Pure joy.

The coaches/volunteers that work with these fine folks on a regular basis are heaven sent. Beautiful people.

Could look at in a different way. Think how much attention Jamaal Charles could draw for the Special Olympics.

Considering the fact that he's in the League now, I think its safe to assume that Jamaal would have dominated at any level he played at when he was 10.

If he had a dozen medals maybe I'd be upset, but I'd bet that after he [probably] pretty easily won 2, they told him or he/his family decided he could play at another level. No problem with him winning two medals.
