Ohio River Algae Bloom

Featured Replies

Traveled down to Craig's Creek, just above Markland Dam, near Warsaw, Ky., earlier this week.

I remember hearing about an Algae Bloom issue in the Ohio River earlier this month, prior to setting off for Ireland/Scotland. The Algae issue completely slipped my mind, until we launched the boat into this concentrated algae mess that consumed the lower third of Craig's Creek, and along the shorelines of the main Ohio RIver. Even out in the channel the stuff was in evidence.

Hopefully, forecast rains will flush this stuff out of here, but right now it's not a bit of fun fishing the Ohio.

Yuk!!!

That green hue can be seen all up and down the river. I heard a report about how this thing happens. A little scary, but they say it won't hurt the water intake.

Believe I saw an article about how Louisville cancelled a paddling (kayak) event on the Ohio because of the algae. It was so bad that I believe that they actually called it toxic.

The Ironman swim on Sunday is in jeopardy because of this.

I heard the end of a news story about that on the radio yesterday. Man, how hot would you and @bugatti be if you did all that training only to have them cut the swim out of the Ironman?

I can't speak for fky, but I would be miserable and in the worst funk known to mankind. I would be en route to Maryland which is having an IM the following weekend (their event was cancelled last week because of the hurricane).

Being that it wouldn't be my first one I would be bummed but would ultimately be ok.

If it were my first one...I couldn't even imagine my level of depression. It would be bad, very bad.

Ironman has had a lot of bad luck of late. Maryland last weekend. The swim in Florida was cancelled last year because of rough conditions. Tahoe was cancelled last year because of smoke and was at risk of being cancelled again this year. They had the race but removed it from the circuit.

I know four people doing it this weekend.

One is an exceptional trail runner and is doing his first Ironman. He has let it be known to everyone that he doesn't like triathlons and is going straight back to trail running. He definitely is upset and wants a swim to happen.

The next is a woman who is also doing her first Ironman. She has been doing Olympic and sprint triathlons for a while and is very good. She qualified for the 70.3 World Championship at her first half ironman earlier this year. With many of the top athletes at Kona this weekend-- including another woman in her age group from our town --- there is a good chance she punches her Ironman World Championship in her first try. She is a really good swimmer and exceptional runner so I think it is slightly to her disadvantage if there isn't a swim. Either way, she qualifies for Kona and I doubt she cares.

The other two are running somewhere around their 10th Ironman. They could care less either way.
