About halfway through the first half, Brossart netted their third goal off a corner. A nice ball was played in and an unmarked player easily placed a header in the back of the net.

That's a quality win for our guys.

Our defense did not seem ready to go when the match started tonight, allowing the early goals seemed to give your boys the chance to put a real focus on the defensive end. It seemed like they were dropping their mids very deep and this really did not allow Cooper the chance to get anything going offensively.

I was surprised how easily the first two goals occurred. The first goal was inexcusable; the second was simply a breakaway that left the keeper on an island. Often, in futbol, if you get down that early, it's 'katy bar the door'.

 

A key play happened mid-first half. Off of a Cooper free kick 35-yards out, BBHS keeper committed to a ball that he could not get to in the crowd, leaving the goal exposed. Snow had a wonderful header attempt just go wide. If Jags score there, possibly a different game.

 

On a different note, the field was in good shape. I know it's early, and things will rapidly deteriorate after the first heavy rain. However, what struck me as odd was the size ... extremely small. End lines were mid football endzone (making it a 110 yard pitch), and touch line was only 3 feet wide of the football sideline. I could see the covered drains between the touchline and the track preventing the option of widening the pitch to a more acceptable width, but the narrow pitch was very noticeable. The third Brossart goal occurred on a simple throw-in that made it to the middle of the field for a header.

Mid first half, Joey Hickman got free down the sideline and popped a nice ball ahead to Dylan Geiman who beat the goalie 1 on 1. 2-0

 

Later first half, Justin Schultz nice throw in to Bryan Duffy for the header into the right side of the goal. 3-0

 

Mustang defense did a stellar job limiting the Cooper blue-chipper Snow's meaningful touches. Sam Hildreth (1st half) and Austin Zalac (2nd half) combine for the shutout.

Surprised is putting it very nicely!!! The breakaway bothered me just as much because at the time that play started we only had a couple people forward, I think we had about 5-7 kids on our side of the field and he still got through easily.

 

Good point on what you called a key play, a couple kids said it skimmed the post so a few inches to the left and we might have seen a match. I also think the third goal, which I erroneously reported as being off a corner, came shortly after this play.

 

As for the field.... it is very symmetrical, problem is we are talking about 110X55. If the drainage system had been done differently I think they could push the width to about 65 yds which would make a huge difference.

The first half seemed 80/20 in brossart favor. Cooper's goalkeeper looked clueless on a consistent basis. Their 3rd string keeper who played the 2nd half made some nice saves preventing the game getting too out of hand. Once Cooper relaxed and starting moving the ball in the 2nd half, they looked like a totally different team. A Cooper parent told me missing their starting GK and Nico Ross in the midfield really exposed them with alot of players moving around due to their lack of depth. Cooper has a lot of talent. I would like to see them play again when they're peaking.

It's always hard to come back when a team jumps out to an early lead. Offenses that start fast can be deadly because there are some boys/defenses that need a few touches before they get up to form. If an opposing team is attacking early it can be hard to defend.

 

Field size was mentioned in a previous post. Does anyone know the size of Pndery park's field in comparison to most fields in NKY. It always seemed small to me. In one way that is nice because the crowd is down close to the pitch and you can really see the action. But it strikes me that having a different sized field (in this case small) favors the team that is used to playing on it. Things happen much more quickly on a smaller field and that takes some getting used to. For instance, a ball kicked forward from the back on some fields may take a few touches or a pass or two before it gets into striking range of the opposing goal whereas on a smaller field, a kick forward may place the ball in striking range almost immediately and the defense will have react more quickly and the individual defenders will have to be much more cognizant of position at all times. Again, this favors the home team, IMO. I suppose the corollary is true when that team then goes to play on a larger field.

Boone plays BB at Pendery tonight, as was noted in another post. That is why I am asking.

 

Also, it was mentioned that Cooper's field is a bit small (narrow?), though I hadn't noticed that when Boone was there last year. So my comments are also relevant to the current topic.
