I saw him write something. As I said earlier, if THAT was the ONLY part of the trick then it's easy to explain.

Having watched enough of Penn & Teller's "Fool Us" (and if you liked this, you should definitely look up that show or watch some clips on Youtube) there are a few places where he could have manipulated the outcome.

 

The first is that the surface in the envelope is pressure sensitive, so he writes on it with his finger through the envelope while Nick Cannon peels off the front (and also why he tells Nick Cannon to hold it away from his body).

 

The second I'm less certain on. My guess is that the jar has a false bottom and he's mounted a small receipt printer inside of the table and someone off stage punches in the number or he does it while the video is playing.

In the grand scheme of things, I don't think they do. They care about ratings. And if they can help create a buzz around the show with a particular instance, they'll do it. I mean the fact that we're talking about this particular guy is proof.

Yes.

I found a mentalist on Fool Us. They never get into the details of how someone does a trick, but you can sort of intuit what was going on by the questions they were asking. This guy does a somewhat similar trick, but I was hoping to find a few others that I've seen that were closer to what this Oz guy did.

Watched it again. Thinking out loud here:

 

He physically comes down to the table with the hosts, so I assume this is important. The camera jumps around a lot, so you can't see his hands the whole time, but, like the first video, I sort of wonder if his tricks don't involve special paper that allows him to write through pressure (that's kind of a cop-out but I don't see another way right now). He could have guessed Heidi's number after she said it by marking a "57" with his thumb (almost like scratching a receipt) before he showed it to Howie. If you look at it, the "57" is barely legible and is to the far right of the page where his thumb would be. (He also gets the Sharpie back from Howie. I'd have to watch it again but I bet he gives a different one to Mel B).

 

When he guesses Mel B's (I didn't realize that was Scary Spice :lol2:) vacation I noticed three things. One, the card she writes the name on has a very small area for her to write in. That seems odd especially since he has a book of index cards. So, there's something to that. My guess is it's easier for him to see what she wrote somehow (and also why he is down next to her). Two, he asks her a very specific question in naming a place and a person. Three, after she writes it down he pulls his pen and stack of index cards back out and asks her the year (he's writing the whole time too, so I think he's buying time with the year thing) and she tells him it was 1998. All together, my guess is he has a note sealed up in the staples with blank spaces for the name, place, and year, he somehow sneaks a peak at her card, does some sleight of hand to get the stapled card in with his index cards, and he writes the name, place, and year to the appropriate spots on the paper by applying pressure with the pen, which probably doesn't have any ink or something, then does some sleight of hand to replace the stapled card. Then when Stern opens it up "fiji," "geri," and "1998" appear in their appropriate spots. Or maybe he writes the whole note like that while he's asking her about the year.

 

Edit: On second thought, he writes at the end with a blue ink pen instead of a sharpie, so he might just write the whole note then and the trick is getting it inside of the staples. Maybe it's not really stapled.
