Cooper 3 Highlands 3

Featured Replies

I thought it looked like they were trying to keep 3 across the back most of the time and what would have been the 4th defender was man-marking most of the match.

Not a bad idea, considering Cooper has one very obvious scoring threat every time he touches the ball.

Bad idea to pull one of the 4 defenders to do it. Use one of the mids and keep your defense at full strength

Exactly. Your holding midfielder should be the one man marking if you go that route and not one of the four in the back.

Agree, I should have been more specific, I was making a general point that it was a good idea on Boone's part to man mark when playing Cooper since they have one dominate player up top. Take away ASnow and defensively things become much easy.

Actually. If the keeper hadn't touched that the defender on the post would have probably stopped it by just standing there. Obviously the keeper has to try for it but I'm wondering if the HHS coaches knew that Cooper had a threat that could put the ball near the posts and they wanted to have a defender there and ready.

You can say that you wanted to clog up the net and I get what is being said, however lets assume the ball hits a defender or keeper cannot control, now you have several offensive players at point blank range to score on a rebound.

Playing 3 defenders is something that a lot of club teams are doing, but you have to remember that most of these club teams have enough high quality kids to get it done. Have to have very good/quick/fast midfielders in order to play it correctly.

Worked like a charm for Boone last year when they played Scott. Mayberry man-marked Treadway who didn't do much in that game. Eventually got a red card. Of course the whole match got out of control and... let's don't go there...:sssh:

I can't understand why teams didn't man-mark Treadway in post season.

I said the same thing last year when they played Trinity. The Trinity coach (I believe) chose to play it straight up and Treadway scored three goals on them in a 3-2 victory. Had he done just a little scouting he'd have man-marked him and probably garnered the victory for Trinty and possibly a state title. A top notch scorer never likes being man-marked but you can only do it vs. teams that don't have many other options to hurt you.

I also remember scratching my head over this one, I think Scott had the players to keep them honest but I still think I would try to shut down Treadway and take my chances.

On the flip side, if the player being man-marked, or doubled, does not mind being a facilitator it can be used to the offensive teams advantage.

When up against a team with a player the caliber of Treadway, you make someone else beat you and don't allow him to do it. As I have noted before, CCH did that every time and he never scored. All CCH victories.

As for the goal Cooper scored on Highlands, it looks to me that the defender redirected the ball not the GK

As for the man marking talk, about 5 years ago a kid named Austin Juniet played for Ncc. He was man marked at the beginning of most matches, his coach adjusted to this by making him check to balls to drag defenders forward and open lanes for threw balls. Once the opposition would figure this out he would then become a goal scorer, I believe he finished his senior year with 29 goals and 20 assits. If kids are coachable and have that much drive and talent you really can't stop them from becoming a factor in the game. That's just the opinion of a coach that doesn't understand the game....

At least your eyes have not failed you flops...

If you are able to look at it frame by frame, you can tell that the goalie does not get to it in time, the boy on the post actually gets his head on it but could not keep it out of the net.
