Wife took this picture of this growth in the yard. It was very hard and she had to use a shovel to break it away from the ground. About the size of a basketball. Anyone know exactly what this is? I looked at a few pictures on-line and didn't see anything that looked just like this.

Looks like a Laetiporus. Also known as chicken mushroom.

It's called a chicken mushroom because it tastes like chicken.

"Chicken of the woods."

Ol' pap used to know a bit about 'shrooms.

Thanks...looked it up after reading this and found some photos similar to the one she took on-line. Many reviews of how good they are to eat.

It's already been tossed so I guess we'll pass on trying it this time. FWIW I don't really trust any wild mushrooms enough to eat them. I've had some picked and cooked by people a lot more knowledgeable than me and they were really tasty.

Wild mushrooms are such a treat, and there are many wonderful mushrooms out there.

If you don't know them you can usually go to your county extension office.

Not to digress, but here's a joke I've gotten a lot of mileage out of over the years.

Guy from (INSERT COUNTY NAME HERE) decides to raise chickens. He buys a rooster and a hen, plants them feet-first. Checks on them the next day and they're dead.

Buys another rooster and hen. Plants them head-first. Checks on them the next day and they're dead.

He doesn't know what to do next. In a flash of insight, he writes his county agricultural agent and describes what he's done. About a week later, he receives a reply.

"Please send a soil sample."
