I have a Husquvarna AWD that pulls me around my yard. Makes a 40 min job, a 25 min job, I love it but it's snappy.

Around $400, looks like I should be able to get something pretty decent around there.

 

Like John Anthony said, if your in the $400 price range i would look at a husquvarna. I wouldn't buy a rider for $400 unless you find a good deal on a used one.

Also, if you look on eBay you can find 10-20% off coupons for Lowes which can save you up to $40 dollars.

Yes $400 for self propelled...around 1200 for riding but think gonna stick with an sp right now.

As long as your hip will allow you I'd go the husquvarna route. If not I'd look at a slightly used ztr, in the 36" deck range. I found a gravely 148z for $2200 this year with only 215 hours on it to use as a backup mower. If you look around d on the used market you can find a good commercial mower for a decent price.
