Sneak peek at Tony Perez Bronze Sculpture

Featured Replies

My brother working on the Tony Perez Bronze Sculpture with the artist. My brother has worked on all the bronze sculptures at GABP with the artist and was actually the model for Nuxhall and Lombardi. He also did all the welding of the rebar which makes up the skeleton of all the sculptures. You can see his initials on the bottom of Joe Nuxhall's foot located on the foot that is in the air. Initials JAF. This will be unveiled at GABP later this year I believe. image.jpg

My favorite Tony Perez quote: "I see the ball, I hit the ball".

Does your brother make a living doing this or is it a hobby?

My brother works at Xavier University where the artist also works. My brother is a welder and when the artist Tom Tsuchiya started to be commissioned to make the sculptures he got with my brother to do the welding etc. they hit it off and have become great friends since then and he has used my brother ever since as both the welder of the skeleton's of the sculptures as well as model of them when needed and also helping in other area's of the work. This one for instance my brother got to go meet Tony and did all the measurements for the statue which was a huge thrill for my brother because Tony Perez was his favorite Red of all time when we were growing up.

He has worked on every sculpture that you will find at GABP including Joe Morgan etc.

The unveiling ceremony is this Saturday Aug 22nd at $:30 before the game. I will be there along with some of my brother and sisters as my brother and the artist unveil the Tony Perez Statue. Also players from the Big Red Machine will also be there with Tony for the unveiling

Should be pretty sweet. Plus the first 30,000 fans going to the game that night will get a replica statue.

I went up early to the unveiling of Joe Morgan's statue. Big crowd of that, so I expect this to be the same.

Where are they putting the statue?

How long does the process take?

I don't k ow the actual timeframe but I do know it was around 3 months ago my brother got to work with Tony Perez himself and got his measurements. And that was long after the initial planning phase and interviews the artist had with Tony that plays an intricate part of the process. He uses the interviews as a way to figure out how he wants the pose to be etc. I am

thinking it's probably a 4 month process from starting the statue to finish. I could be wrong though.

Ceremony was pretty cool. A lot of people were there to watch it was pretty cool. A ton of players from the big red machine were there which was cool along with Dave Parker and Andre Dawson and some other players he played with.

My my brother was mentioned in the speech from Tom the artist which was pretty cool also.
