New Volleyball coach at Simon Kenton

Lets be real, it's not like Atwood went to UCLA or Penn State. The Frosh coach may have been the most knowledgeable person on that staff. The JV coach was a mess.

I would say SK is off to a rocky start. Made it to Flight 3 or "Bronze" bracket at Bluegrass games, which isn't too terrible, but then lost first match to Boone County, the kind of team they are going to have to beat to have success.

Look at it this way - 1/3 of SK's matches they have no chance, 1/3 they should win easy. It's that final 1/3 that will determine their season, those winnable matches against similar opponents - like Boone Co, Highlands, Campbell Co, Conner.

While I don't doubt that there is some validity to what you say, not all public school parents are financially unable to pay. Quite a few fork out money for Elite/Select/Club Baseball, Basketball, and Soccer programs, and even Volleyball too. Parents seem to find a way to get the money when it comes to their kids, and their are fundraising opportunities at each club to help lessen the cost.

My point is that public schools start their focus on athletic excellence too late. I don't disagree with DallasLaredo that it comes back to the parents, but come on, we're all mushrooms, and if no one ever shines a light how would you know how important it is to get your kid into club sports before middle school? It's fairly obvious that parochial schools have figured out that early involvement in sports translates into athletic excellence.

No, the private schools don't have organized rec volleyball teams prior to 3rd grade, (they do have K-2 offerings in other sports), but they do have flyers and people from NKYVC coming to their schools starting with kindergarten kids to pump their programs. And if your school has athletic offerings and focus's on athletic and academic excellence, what do you thing those K-2nd grade kids parents do? They enroll them into Sprinkles to try and get them a leg up for when their 3rd graders, because they want their kids to succeed in the class room and on the court. It's a cultural thing.

Public school parents don't have that... at least not anywhere around where I'm from.

I think both points are valid. While some public schools may provide volleyball clubs in elementary school (Boone County,) I'm not aware of any that have an organized program such as the parochial schools do where girls are given the opportunity to play on teams and play other schools. Unless a parent of a public school child seeks out opportunities for their child on their own they don't experience organized volleyball until 6th grade and are at a disadvantage when compared to peers in private school.

NDA and St. Henry to a lesser extent also dominate because if you are a parent who can afford it and you have a daughter that is a decent volleyball player, you are going to send them to NDA whether you are Catholic or not. It isn't that Catholics are superior athletes, it is just that tuition based high schools with teams that perform well, are going to attract the best players in the area. Highlands football is an example as well. It is a public school but in the past they have accepted tuition based students (not sure if this is currently true;) therefore, families with football players sent them out of district to go to Highlands. I know of a family now who lives with her sons in an apartment in the Ft. Thomas school district so they can play football at highlands while her husband lives at their house in another district.

Money is a significant factor for public school kids because not everyone can afford to send their kids to a private school and give them a chance to play on a team that will go to state. I really think the public and parochial schools should play in separate sports conferences because unless the disparities change the catholic/private schools will continue their streak of state championships.

Not sure who you have been talking to because I've heard the opposite. You go from a staff that know volleyball really well to the new staff that doesn't. I believe it was said the new JV coach has never coached before. Heck the previous HC must know something if she is on a college staff now.

Remember you don't have to always like your coach. I know a lot of coaches that if you ask players if they liked their coach when they played for them they would say no, but you ask them after they graduate they understand now why they did what they did and they respect them more.

I'll take hard coaches that know the game than any new coach who got the job by default and a staff of inexperienced assistants.

Sorry Bandit, I believe you are talking to the wrong ppl.

BINGO. I've said this about my high school baseball coach. Learned more than just baseball, "life lessons" that prepared me beyond HS athletics.

That is unfortunate. That's a big drop off from the recent past, especially last year they made it to the Gold finals i believe.

How's the season turning out for SK? Better, worse or same as in years past?

Looks to be worse according to Maxpreps, they are 10-14 but heard they lost all 5 games at Cupcake classic, 2 of the games are not listed so that being the case they are 10-16 if that is indeed true, that would be a 9 game losing streak for the Varsity. If this winning percentage does not change this would be the worse season by far according to the Kentucky Scoreboard records in the last 13 yrs.

Thanks! Are we attributing the season to the skill level of the kids or coaching?

Well it appears to not have lasted as long as expected. I was just told the HC has stepped down. No other details.

Good. I had a first hand experience with her this year that soured me on her tenure. Good deal for the kids too.

After reading the thread, went back looking to see how many girls were on the Enquirer All Star list from SK. Only found one. Only leaves three options- the players weren't as good as advertised, the coaching was horrible and didn't allow an expert eye to see their natural talents or the coach didn't play the best players and chose favorites.

I think I may know what you are referring to...match vs Dixie? If so, that was embarrassing and we do apologize on behalf of SK supporters.

Thanks.

I'm pretty certain that having SK's assistant principal on hand that night to witness things, and him assuring our AD that the situation would be handled, pretty much quieted and calmed what could have been a very bad situation. All of our hats were off to the Pioneers for that. At the end of the day we're all from the same school system and wish each other well when we're not facing each other. :)

Any idea who the new coach is?
