April 28, 201511 yr IMO, what's bush league is taking away scholarships from kids that have been a part of the program for four years and were, most likely, looking forward to a senior season and all that comes with that. As a parent, nothing beats the recognition of senior night. Shameful. They are told yearly prior to senior night that they will not receive the fifth year offer, so they still participate on senior night. Academically, they are all seniors anyway and graduate in the spring. They know before hand that the redshirt junior year could be their last, so how is that 'unfair' or 'shameful', or 'bush league'. They have gotten what was promised to them as freshmen, which was a FOUR year scholarship to earn their degree while playing football. So you have four years to do that, not five, unless you're fortunate to get the offer. This is Div I football, not pop warner, either you earn that extra year of free money or you don't. i'm sure Ohio State, UK, Alabama, FSU, Oregon, etc all follow the same pattern. When you can show me a program that say"'s I promise you a fifth year scholarship no matter what", then maybe I will listen, but that simply does not exist to my knowledge. I understand what you are saying, but that's just the business of div I college football.
April 28, 201511 yr You can't lose, what you aren't offered!!! If you think this only happens at Miami, you're dead wrong!! It's common with EVERY FBS program. Why in the heck would a player assume they would gain that extra playing year with a scholarship. Many are happy the new coach who may have a different future plan decided to keep them at all. There is nothing Wrong with a football coach not giving an extra year scholarship to a player who has not made a strong contribution and directing that extra scholarship number to a highly recruited freshman that fits his scheme. You sound bitter because maybe your son was denied by Miami, I don't know. Yes The Redhawks lost to an FCS school on a high school halfback pass play, and they talk about it often as the biggest joke of the year; loosing to them. Wishful thinking on 0-12 this year, they are bigger, stronger and better. I just hope your sons teammates can focus on education and football and stay out of the news for stupid bar fights. Good day sir. Go Redhawks! Nope, not bitter at all. He went to a school that is highly regarded in his major, we've not paid a dime for his school, he's started all 3 seasons he's been there, and he got to go into their house and beat the Redhawks--while collecting a check from them to do so. Nothing to be bitter about here.
April 28, 201511 yr Scholarships are renewed annually. If those kids weren't good enough to play as seniors, not sure that they were good enough to play as juniors. Sounds to me like the new coach just wanted to clean house and start over. Maybe I'm old fashioned but if I had guys that had worked hard enough to earn the scholarship for 4 years and wanted to play the 5th season, I'd honor it. No sense of LOYALTY in that program.

The coaches first loyalty is to Miami University and rebuilding that program. And remember, those are not kids he recruited. Trust me, Coach Martin is well liked by the athletes and community with what he did in one year.

Now please listen to your own writing and rethink your logic. It is possibly true that they were not good enough to play as juniors. But as a "LOYAL" coach, Martin renewed their senior academic year with the scholarship(that he could have used for a player that would perform better) to allow them to complete their educational degree. A bush league, un-loyal, non caring coach would have yanked the scholarship and left the player out in the cold trying to find $40,000 to pay for their final year of education at and outstanding above average institution. Hmmmmm
April 30, 201511 yr 5th years are not guaranteed anywhere. Harbaugh cleaned house when he got to AA, several 5th years not invited back. A kid is RS because he is not ready to contribute, whether it be athletically or academically. I was RS my frosh year, and it was made perfectly clear of what could happen after 4. Heck, technically most schools only offer 1 year renewables. Some have gone to 4 year guarantees, but not most. If you have a beef with what Martin has done here, might want to check your favorite team. Happens at every D1 school every year.
