Bengals Sign Defensive Tackle Pat Sims

Featured Replies

I think Dalton will be gone if he does not show a marked improvement.

Agreed. They seem to be high on AJ McCarron from what I have read, and with them being able to cut Andy without much of a cap hit after this season then I think it is very possible. The Bengals have a lot of starters draft picks that are going to be free agents after this year, some of them are Zeitler, Dre K., Marvin Jones, Sanu, etc. Zeitler and Dre they could lock up if they exercise the 5th year option on them but it would be expensive. So Dalton is going to have to take that next step, or else I do think they will move on from him because they could use that money to sign these other guys.

Guys they aren't cutting Andy. Just wait and see. Unless a whole new staff comes in, that may happen. But MB still will call the shots and he is right in MB's price range for a starting QB.

Exactly what we need, someone cheap that can stop the run. Good pick up by the Bengals.

Sims was a player I was upset they let go when they did. I only hope he still has some good years ahead of him. Bengals seem to let some players go in their prime and they find their way back when they are of little help. Hope this one isn't too late.

For those talking about AJ McCaron taking Dalton's place this year, it isn't going t happen unless there is an injury. The biggest problem I have with Marvin and Mike Brown is they continue to defend Dalton. He isn't going to sit on the sidelines unless he is physically unable to play. It's sad because the window is closing fast on this team.

What has me really surprised is the lack of talk about AJ Green's contract. Am I the only one who thnks it's a possibility that Green may want to go elsewhere after this season? Why would he want to stay? Bengals seem to rather take care of other players like Dalton etc. with new contracts while Green sits waiting patiently.

If I were in AJ's shoes, I for one wouldn't mind testing the FA waters after knowing my team was in no hurry to lock me up with a deal. I'd want to go to a team that has a chance of winning and has money to spend.

My guess is the Bengals are going to quietly encourage AJ to test the market because they probably don't want to afford him but don't want to say it.

He is right in his price range currently. Mike Brown has never said much negative about Dalton, however he has never truly came out and talked very highly of him. It was last year I believe when Mike Brown was talking about the top QB's the Bengals had through the years from Anderson, Boomer, and even Palmer he talked very highly of and talk about how he could make every throw, etc. When it came to Dalton he even said they are still waiting to see what they truly have in him, and how they need to have more pieces around him to do well. His price range is not perfect for him if his play doesn't take the next step, and why they arranged his contract for them to be able to get out of it after this year if Dalton doesn't improve.

I think Mike Brown is making this a make or break year for both Dalton and Lewis.

AJ Green has said a few times this off season that he would like to get an extension worked out before this season starts. However Mike Brown made a comment the other day that makes me think they may not get it done before this year. He said that they will franchise tag him if it comes down to it, so he said they basically have two years still to try to work out an extension. It sounds like they are going to try to extend a lot of their free agents that come up next year first and then just franchise tag him. Which I must admit I think is wrong, he needs to be their focus.

Which is the Mike Brown recipe for doing things and dissing his best players and why this team has never won a SB or even won a p,ayoff game under him. If I were AJ Green I'd be out of here.

Can't say I disagree. However the recent track record shows that the Bengals do a good job locking up their talented players, its not like it use to be. They have done much better job of that recently extending their own talented guys. So it still very well could happen, so need to throw a fit about it yet. However I admit to I would rather them just get him locked up now and get it over with.

They are doing the same they've always done. They lock up some avg guys for way too much and treat their star players like 2nd rate citizens. They depend too much on franchise tag for their best players and then scratch their heads and wonder why they want to leave after that. The NFL lifespan for a player is very small and players only have maybe 1 or at the most 2 big contracts after their rookie deals. When a team refuses to sign a player to a multi year deal when that player is a star they take the risk of getting injured on that 1 franchise tag year and miss opportunities to sign a big multi year deal. I would go elsewhere if I were AJ, somewhere where he feels wanted and somewhere he can win and get that big deal because it could be the last.

What star players recently have they not signed long term? You are still living in the past when they made every wrong move possible. Since after the 2010 season they have seemed to change their approach and have drafted well and have extended the talented guys they have drafted. You were one of the ones who through a big fit about Geno Atkins and it ended up being for no reason because they locked him up a year in advance. Burfict one of the best linebackers in the league they locked up before his contract ran out. They made the right choice in extending Dunlap and not Johnson two years ago. They have done much better locking up their own talent. So there is no reason to believe that they won't lock him up long term, just like they did when you threw your fit about Geno at around this same time in the off season and they locked him up right before the season started. So they have showed that they can and will lock up the talent unlike in the past.

Not to mention AJ Green is going to be the highest played player on the team this season anyways making over ten million.

I'm not going to get into it with you, you still believe their drafts have been great, I tend to disagree. Just because someone says they have drafted great doesnt mean they actually have, I tend to let the actual facts do the talking about the draft. Just look over the past 5 years at the 2nd and 3rd round picks and see how great they actually were, along with even a 1st rounder in Dre.

I will give you a few names. Hunt, Devan Stills both 2nd rounders, Could go on with 3rd rounders etc. the fact of the matter is we get maybe 1 pretty good player a draft and have more misses than impact players. Don't let the hype blind you from the facts.

I will look into it even more but just off the top of my head I know the last two years in the 2nd round they have gotten two pretty good runningbacks in Hill and Gio. Dre when they let him get on the field last year showed that he can produce and we should know more about both him and Denard this year since it looks like they both will get to play more. Sanu has shown to have been a good 3rd round pick, and same with Marvin Jones as a 5th round pick. George Illoka I believe was also a 5th round pick and was rated as one of the top safeties in the NFL last year. Now I hate to say this but I admit Devon Still hasn't lived up to being a 2nd round pick a few years ago though. Zeitler was ranked as one of the best guards last year. Boling who was a 4th round pick is not a pro bowler but has shown to be a true NFL starter. Tyler Eifert has all the talent in the world but until he stays healthy it is hard to judge him so far. Bodine the 4th round pick from last year started every single game at center last year and did seem to get better as the year went on after starting off the year poorly.

Shoot the whole offensive side of the ball is basically Bengal draft picks and was an offense that finished in the top 10 in the NFL before last year when injuries killed them. Brandon Thompson who was a 3rd rounder or 4th I believe has shown to productive. I will try to find the stat but the Bengals are one of the top teams in players drafted that start and play in the NFL. So yes overall the Bengals drafts have done well and has produced many starters for the Bengals. Only a few stars, however most teams don't even find to many starters much less to many stars. This is a Bengals team that has been to the playoffs the last 4 years because of players they have drafted. Now have they gotten out of the first round nope, but something we can agree on two of the biggest reasons for that is the QB and the Head Coach.

Yes the Bengals have had a few misses in the draft too, and all teams do. Its almost impossible not to have misses in the draft, and the Bengals over the last 4 or 5 years have had more guys than most who have ended up being starters or contributors on the team. As I mentioned in the post above basically every starter on the Bengals offense was a Bengal draft pick and that offense was a top 10 offense before injuries killed them last year.

The issue is, it has been proven time and time again that RB's are not too hard to find in lower rounds and is why there are very few if any RB's going anymore in the 1st round.

Lets look at Gio for instance, who btw I really like. He was our 2nd round pick in 2013 and by 2014 he already lost his starting position. So we spend 2 high picks on the same position in back to back years.

Now let's

talk about the injuries which you stated is the reason behind our offensive drop off last year. How many years now have we heard how talented and deep this team is? If that were the fact then we shouldn't have that big of drop off. I will say something else along that line also. Going i to last year there were several on here bragging about how great our WR corps was. If that was the case then how come they were so horrible in production without AJ Green? Sanu was horrible through the majority of the season. He had like 2 good games and then led the league in drops. A team that has drafted for depth the last few years have really not done that great of a job.

Oh and that stat about the bengals drafting players that are playing on the team is among the most, well it's not hard to keep draft picks when you don't go out and spend the money on other teams FA's that can help. It also isn't as hard to play for a bad team either.
