Northern KY Well Represented In Athens...

Featured Replies

It appears that Northern KY may be a hot spot for top MAC level talent in 2016. Spotted on campus at Ohio University's Junior Day on Saturday were Simon Kenton's Dillon Powell, Newport Central Catholic's Jacob Smith, Ryle's Colin England, and Scott High School's Deondre Pleasant, Roberto London, and Ron Rice. I anticipate schools such as Akron, Bowling Green, Toledo, Central Michigan, and Ball State could spend a lot of time in our bleachers looking to fill future spots for their programs. But of course, I'm no John Madden either. So, feel free to rip into me...

I hope more colleges check out these young men all are great football players.

Our area is not considered a hotbed for recruiting. In saying that every year there a couple handfuls of VERY good football players that should be playing at the next level. This year we have our fair share of excellent Running Backs. The press could help with exposure, but unfortunately the major press is mostly located across the river. Not that Cincy football doesn't deserve the pub. I kind of feel we get the short end of the stick when it comes to exposure. After April 15th we will see how serious the colleges are about our area and our kids.

Good luck to all the young men on their dream to play D1 football. This is the time to be sending film out and finding out intrest level if any and making a plan to visit camps with invites from the film.

One of the local attendees noted on his social media that he attended the junior day at University of Ohio, rather than Ohio University. Would a program take offense to this minimal error?

No.

Kid once tweeted he committed to "The University of Ole Miss."

But you did bring up an interesting topic, however: Social Media. One of the things that Head Coach Frank Solich did specifically mention was that "everybody is digging". Kids and their parents are digging into schools trying to find the right fit and schools are digging into kids...So, with that being said, I hope these kids are aware that their digital footprints and Social Media presence will factor into a school's decision to bring a kid into their locker room.

^^^take note parents! Don't screw it up for your kid by posting something stupid.

So you think college coaches recruit from media coverage? Could not be further from accurate. Kids from the other side of the river get recruited more because they are better football players that project better at the next level. There may be a couple of kids from this 2016 class that get a look at D1, but I doubt any of them would be at the RB position. These junior days are honestly irrelevant, just like on campus visits made by kids during the season that aren't officials. As you said, wait until after the season starts and look for offers, not visits and not letters. I think I could get an invite to a junior day, and I am old and slow. Oh, and by all means do not listen to UK guy. Not sure there is anyone less informed about the process.

I know they don't recruit off of media. It can help bring a name to the coaches attention. Coaches don't live in a vacuum. They read the paper and watch the news just like the rest of us. So if a kid is say nominated for WCPO player of the week a few times. A local coach may take notice and check him out. By all means does not mean he likes what he sees or will be interested. Bill Walsh seen Jerry Rice on the evening news during an away game, was interested and checked him out the rest is history. So do coaches recruit off of media, no. Can you get a look because of media hype, I would say yes.

Was I just seeing/hearing things or are those MAC coaches already starting to pour into Northern KY?

Miami of Ohio, Ohio u. were at Ryle Monday. I'm sure they had some other stops while they were here. Anyone else seen them at spring ball?

I hope they all land a D1 offer. RB and skill spots are the hardest. Schools recruit from all over the U.S. don't read to much into a JR day. most schools have a 100 kids to such events. You are not being recuirted until you have a offer.

Also d1 schools showing up at HS is a great think. Dixie last year had around 15 D1 schools show up in the spring. Two kids got offers out of that.

15 schools never equates to 15 kids signing DI offers. Chances are the majority of those 15 schools were simply looking at only a couple in the first place.

When Briscoe was being recruited by UK and all the others for basketball and his school had a dozen coaches show up, they were there for him, not the other 13 kids on the team.
