Oral History of Cal's First UK Team

Featured Replies

Fun read. That was one of my all-time favorite teams and I think the article did a good job of capturing "how it felt" to be a UK fan during that time.

Made it through about 80% of it so far. I will finish it up later. Such a fun team.

I think I've said this before...the night they lost to WVU my wife and I were in New Orleans for our 20th anniversary and went back to the hotel to watch the game. Afterwards we were of course really upset they had lost. That night I couldn't get comfortable and tossed and turned all night. Ended up sitting in a chair all night trying to get some rest. All night I kept thinking about the game and couldn't get it out of my head, I thought that was the reason for my discomfort. Three days later after not sleeping anymore, went to the doctor and ended up in the hospital for the first time with my heart.

I'm not saying that game "broke" my heart, but I can't say that it didn't either.

That UK team was a fun team to watch, but I guess I just have a different taste than most when thinking about some of my favorite UK teams. That team brought excitement back to UK basketball which I loved, but it is not one of my top 5 and probably barely top 10 in my favorite UK teams. Obviously the National Championship teams are up there. However the teams that didn't win it all that I have always liked were the UK teams that could shoot the ball and hit 3's and that was the weak spot on the 2010 team and what ended up costing them. Plus I have always enjoyed the UK teams that went on runs that may have not been expected come tournament time like the 2011 Brandon Knight team, and last years team. That 2011 team and last year's team were two of the most enjoyable tournament as a UK fan for me in a year that we didn't win a title.
