KHSAA Implements Age Restrictions For Middle School

Read the way yours is stated and the way mine is stated. On the KHSAA website it does not say a 14 year old can't play against other 7th graders or below. It says a student cannot be 14 before Aug. 1 of their 7th grade year and play against 7th graders. There's a big difference in the two.

From the KHSAA site:

Beginning with the 2015-2016 school year, require that a student who turns:

Fifteen (15) years of age prior to August 1 of the current school year shall not be eligible for interscholastic athletics in Kentucky in competition against students exclusively enrolled in grades eight (8) and below;

Fourteen (14) years of age prior to August 1 of the current school year shall not be eligible for interscholastic athletics in Kentucky in competition against students exclusively enrolled in grades seven (7) and below;

and

Thirteen (13) years of age prior to August 1 of the current school year shall not be eligible for interscholastic athletics in Kentucky in competition against students exclusively enrolled in grades six (6) and below;

I don't see what I said being any different. What am I missing?

You didn't put 8.1 in 14 or 13 year old posts. I believe it was inferred, as I read it. Nitpicking on Pirates part.

In your original post it didn't say "prior to Aug. 1" when referring to the 14 year old 7th grader or the 13 year old 6th grader.

By not stating that information it implies that a child couldn't participate with other 7th graders if they turned 14 after Aug. 1 or participate with other 6th graders if the turned 13 after Aug. 1.

Think about it a second.

Gotcha. Yes, it was inferred.

Gotcha. I assumed that since I put the "prior to" in the first line that folks would know it applied to the others.

I'm not nitpicking and it may have been inferred by most, but clarity is a pretty big deal in this instance.

Read literally that first post could create confusion when none is needed.

The only thing that's really changed is that there is a specific date in which a kid can't be a certain age before each grade or they'd be ineligible and that a student has to sit out during a year they're held back. It still all boils down to not being 19 be four Aug. 1 of your senior year, which has been the rule since the Bronze Age.

School systems better be on watch. There are going to be a decent amount of fake birth certificates and falsified forms used by parents and guardians to make their kids eligible. Seen it happen several times in football since the KYMSFA was formed in 2008.

My freshman year in HS back in 1985 I was 14 yrs old and had just turned 14 that July prior to 9th grade year. I was fortunate enough to start JV and play Varsity minutes so as a 14 yr old I was competing against guys as old as 19 I'm sure in some cases. I just cant imagine being 15 in the 8th grade....man I couldve dominated back then. LOL

Really? I mean I'm sure it happens but I wouldn't of thought that many over 6 years.

Correct, it eventually caught up to them if they did.

Agree, these are the kids where the middle school years are as good as it gets for them:isurrender:

I think he was saying that you get caught eventually.

You don't catch up.

I am trying to figure out why KHSAA cares about MS. It seems like most of the middle school kids I know focus on club/AAU and just do the school sports for fun. So if a kid is told he can not play for the school, they just play on the club team I assume. My son's school has basketball and volleyball, which I am sure the kids that are serious are doing this on a club/AAU team. I know some of the high schools have middle school football and cross country. Is that why they are getting involved in this?
