Jails Have Become Warehouses for the Poor, Ill and Addicted, a Report Says

As Clyde's link said, not in Louisiana...

Didn't read the link, but in Louisiana possession of ONE joint is a felony?

If true I'd think the arrest from Mardi Gras alone would be enough to fill up Angola Prison!

Not new but incarcerating people for smoking marijuana has certainly led to overcrowding.

Misdemeanor, wont spend more that a day or two in jail if that for smoking marijuana. Some departments just give a citation for it and don't even arrest for smoking or small amounts.

No, you need to people to willfully break those laws. If I don't want to go to prison all I have to do is NOT break the law, it's as simple as that.

What new law has been enacted that shouldn't have been that has lead to imprisoning more people?

There you go with that whole personal responsibility thing JD. We can have none of that. It's the laws that are wrong, not those that break the laws.

One thing that is filling up the local jails is TBUT, theft by unlawful taking. Stealing, for guess what? To sell and then buy drugs. Not a simple joint either folks. Meth, heroin, pills. It's ridiculous how bad the drug problem is in Kentucky.

I see this every day in court. Every flipping day. Multiple cases. Over and over.

That's a huge problem, but in most cases it's a misdemeanor and they go right back to doing it.

I saw an interview with a reformed shoplifter once and he said the average shoplifter get's caught 1 in 10 times. The good ones get caught maybe 1 in 25 and the really good ones like he was get caught 1 time out of every 200 times they steal. That's a lot of pay back for little risk.

Local police are taking numerous burglary and theft reports daily as people get bolder and bolder to just walk up on peoples property and take what they want. If you go to a pawn shop and see used power tools there is by my educated guess a better than 75% chance they are stolen. If they are new it's close to 100% chance they are stolen.

TBUT is a huge problem and drugs in almost every case are the root cause.

Does Louisiana have a 3 strike law?

Not sure but it proves the point that private companies are helping draft laws that will incarcerate more people. It's their way of surviving.

Shocking Facts About America's For-Profit Prison Industry

To be fair there are private companies or Lobbyist helping draft bills for every Industry in America.

I do agree that laws have gotten ridiculous and are jails are to crowded. I'm not buying the race angle the only color theses companies see is green.

Well, sure.

But AHCA doesn't put people in jail and ruin families.

Tax law doesn't.

Oil companies lobbyists do not.

It just puts a strangle hold on the economy costing jobs and increased taxes on the entire population . It does ruin families.

I think it's a little of both. Some of the examples in this thread have been very poor . But I do agree like things such as the war on drugs has cost thus country more financial than it has benefited.

But to many people in this thread completely ignore personal responsibility angle. It's not my problem if someone chooses to break a law and can't afford to pay a fine. Don't break the law if you can't do the time.

I think there is a healthy middle ground that can be had here but some of these hot takes are ridiculous.

I see the middle ground in the marijuana debate. I don't think one should go to jail for a small amount. Actually, it is often at the officers discretion in Kentucky. I have just cited people for a joint they brought into the Judicial Center. Large quantities of marijuana and other drugs are a different story. Meth and heroin are destroying our communities and school systems.

A report came out saying Louisiana has the highest incarceration rate in the world. 2X the national average.

Why does his son continue to break the law? Quit walking around with a joint in your pocket already. If his son is dumb enough to repeatedly get arrested for the same thing maybe he deserves to spend an extended amount of time in prison. And no I don't think someone needs to go to prison for 20 years for a joint. But good lord, how about people quit breaking the freaking law.

Amen. Maybe first offense should be dealt with more strictly! Maybe not jail but with labor. The best thing that could have happened to my kids is I caught them and sentenced them to hard labor myself.....never had another issue. IMO there is too much tolerance for pot, drugs and alcohol. I don't think any of think any of them are really essential to have a good life, and I have known too many who ruined their life and the lives of others with their use.
