February 10, 201511 yr No doubt Hoover was terrible last year. In prior years, he was OK, not great but OK. I am just saying let him tryout and see what happens. They have lost some relievers from last year and I am not exactly sure what they have back. I heard the Cowboy talking about him not long ago and he was saying he thinks he can bounce back. Maybe he is just putting a happy face on things but I don't see how it hurts to see. If he does not make the team, believe me, I will not be upset as that means he was beat out. The Gregg signing intrigues me. If he is healthy again, he could be a steal - was nasty two years ago. Two seasons ago he had a 3.48 ERA, allowed 4.6 BB per 9 and had a 1.371 WHIP. He was below average then for a reliever--he's 36 now. This is a nothing signing. Badenhop can still have some value.
February 10, 201511 yr Author Anyone know anything about Jose Mijares? Seems like a sleeper that might crack the roster. Solid numbers in the past, he's not young but he is a lefty. If I remember right he has pretty good stuff. I think the Reds might carry 3 lefty a out of the pen this year. Parra, Maholm, Mijares and Marshall if healthy. They also have Holmberg who was terrible at times last year, but I think he is better than that. A lot of options and I think they might carry 3 of them. From the right side The only locks I see are Lecure, Jumbo and Badenhop. Hopefully Iglesias makes the rotation but if not he could find his way to the pen also. I almost forgot about Chapman somehow. No way they carry 4 leftys but I could see them carrying 3.
February 10, 201511 yr Can't imagine Goodyear will tell anything about Hoover. If he's terrible in Goodyear, cut him loose. However, if he's good, I don't think it gives any indication of how he is going to pitch with pressure on him. Needs to be on a short leash in the 1st half of the season. (Of course, Reds may be out of it by ASG.)

February 11, 201511 yr Why did the Red Sox let Badenhop walk? Personally, I think Masterson ends up in the bullpen. If that's the case he's very similar to Badenhop when healthy--a ground ball machine. If he does make the rotation that means Alexi Ogando will end up in the pen. Also, they have 3-4 pitching prospects that are likely to see the big leagues sometime this season be it in the rotation or bullpen. They also brought in Robbie Ross and Anthony Varvaro. Right now they have: Ogando or Masterson, Tazawa, Uehara, Varvaro, Ross, Mujica and Breslow signed to major league contracts. Add in the youngsters and there wasn't a lot of spots open. He did a nice job for the Red Sox the past couple of seasons and should be a nice pickup for the Reds.
