Ryle scored early and held a 2-0 lead thru most of the game. Neither team hit the ball well. CCH dropped in 4 Texas Leagurers for 4 of their 6 hits and the Raiders compiled just 4 hits and a bunch of atom balls. CCH had the top of the order up in the bottom of the 6th a Texas Leaguer from Tiereny, and Blazejewski and an E5 by Blesser, the DH Spradlin dropped in the mother of all Texas Leaguers that hit the chalk about 20 feet behind first to tie the game.

Duncan walked to score the go ahead run. The raiders left the tying run on first to end the game.

CCH pitched their ace, Blesser for what i think was his first start of the season. The Raiders pitched rookie Jeff Hatfield for his second varsity start. Both pitched complete games. Good ball game considering the cold and wind.

Way to go Duncan......

Seems to me like Ryle just doesn't know how to win a ball game as I'm pretty sure that's the second game they lost by walking in the go ahead run. It's a real shame too because they are a talented team, but talent doesn't get you a Regional Championship (or in Ryle's case the past couple of years, out of their own district). I'd say a good goal for this Ryle team would be to make it to the Regional Tournament and then consider everything after that bonus.

I think the young Ryle pitcher did an excelent job for his second varsity game.

You also have to consider the 3 bloopers that set the table for the CCH narrow escape. Last year they started 5 soph's and were right there at the top so I think they will be just fine setting their own goals.

Any win over Ryle is a good win. They are a very tough "out" in baseball.

Tough conditions as far as temperature and wind gusts today. Kudos to the players and fans that were there all day. Not enough hot chocolate to go around, Mrs. Gruber and her lovely assistant's, Michelle and Jenna, were hopping in the concession area.

Jeff Hatfield, the Ryle pitcher, for the most part, kept the Colonels off the base path for four innings. Things came together for CCH in the bottom of the 5th, for the boys in blue to take the lead.

Josh Bleser, junior starter for CCH got the win. Always good to start the season 1-0. I did overhear a couple of Ryle players say that Bleser had never started a game of this importance, so he might be a little nervous. Guys...he started the REGIONAL FINAL last year. Way to get off to a good start, Josh.

One constant in this young season for the Colonels has been Chris Farrell's play behind the plate. Very, very good.

Would CCH be the rightful #1 in the region now beating the #1 (Beechwood), #3 (Ryle), and what some people see as the #4 team in the region Boone!?

While it is early in the Baseball season, beating the number 1 Beechwood Tigers, then beating the number 3 and 4 teams Ryle Raiders and Boone County Rebels, how could you not be voted (rated) number 1 in the 9th Region as of today.....

Right now I tend to agree with you Theoldguy. However, I would like to see these teams play each other at least twice before I bet on it. Opppps...I forgot, you can't bet on baseball.

Agreed, but as #14 said, I don't bet on baseball :D, but you can only go with what has happened.....Baseball is a little different than basketball or football, because until you have the number one pitchers go head to head against each other, it really is kind of hard to say who is best....but as I said earlier, you can only vote on what has happened, not on what might be......

CovCath is probably the deepest team in the region so that helps their case for #1. But as DD said it's hard to say without seeing those top 3 or 4 play each other at least twice.

DD - I guess we watch the games differently.

Did Blaze have more than one hit? If not, the one I remember was a first pitch fastball that he was sitting on and hit a screamer the the shortstop side of the 2nd baseman.

Spradlin's hit, while not necessarily Bonds-esque, was far from a "Texas leaguer" and probably was more like 180 feet and not "20 feet behind first". It was a solid hit that faded towards the line - clutch hit to say the least.

The Ryle pitcher did very well. He kept the ball low and caused a lot of balls to be pounded into the ground. Nice outing regardless of how many starts he's had.

As I said before the season started, Ryle has a chance to win the region as do CCH, Beechwood, and Conner. It should be fun.

Just a few comments on the game. CovCath did have good fortune with four bloopers, Ryle did not. Ryle hit 3 long shots that would have been yard or close on a warm day without a howling wind blowing in. Blaze's shot to center was a rocket. The ball that Spradlin hit landed between first base and the fence, closer to first base but certainly not just 20 feet. Garrett Wagner makes any play on a high pop up down the right field line only 20 feet behind first base. He is the best second baseman I have seen this year. The error on Bleser's sharply hit ground ball was our costly defensive mistake and CovCath took advantage of it. Jeff Hatfield was terrific again with mixing up his 4 pitches, changing speeds and locations every pitch. He has had 3 quality starts (Campbell, Elizabethtown and CovCath). Bleser was not as sharp as he will be later in the year.
