We will just have to look at this with completely different perspectives. There is an opportunity being offered. They can freely accept or not. If they freely accept, there are conditions to the opportunity. They can quit any time they want. Not sure how one can equate that with being "forced" into something.

I'm going to jack my own thread here a little.

Let me ask you this. You invite me to supper at your house. I say sure, that sounds like fun. You inform me you will be serving tuna casserole...which just so happens to be one of the rare dishes I do not like. Are you forcing me to eat tuna casserole? I would say no, but by your perspective the answer would have to be yes if being consistent with your post above.

Think this pretty much gives me the answer, but where have his parents been in all this? Have you had any communication with them?

I agree that you did the right thing. One kid cannot resin things for everyone. I do have to wonder where this anger is coming from. Is the school counselor involved? Nor, since it is church sponsored, would it be appropriate for the minister or priest to talk with him?

The head coach of our team sent me a pic yesterday that read as such.

Your child's success or lack of success in sports does not indicate what kind of parent you are.

but having an athlete that is coachable, respectful, a great teammate, mentally tough, resiliant and tries their best IS a direct reflection of your parenting.

You tried to help him and obviously put time and effort into it. That is what you could do and did.

The lack of progress and improvement means that this track was not working, even with your outstanding efforts and attention. As indicated that probably means there are issues beyond anything a coach can address on their own.

For the good the overall team and for the good of the child and family you made the right decision. Who ever is the guardian / care giver needs to take this behavior seriously and seems like they get clinical help. Continuing to go down the path of staying on the team may have given false hope to more serious issue. Dealing with child behavior and emotional issues is often trips down alleys that do not pan out until the real cause is found. It is always important to accept when a path is not working to improve the child - and abandon that path to find another until the root issues are found and addressed.

You did all you could but your final decision was correct for all involved.
