That's a lot better than what the basketball team is looking at. To be perfectly honest, the football team plays a tough schedule, as does the basketball team. However the football team won the games they were supposed to, except for maybe one, in the playoffs they advanced to play Highlands and gave them a good game. To say there isn't talent available, shows that you know nothing about the school.

6-5 is a below average season for Ashland football. It appears that you are ready to sharpen a tool.

 

Ashland was 3-1 in district play defeating Rowan County (2-8), Boyd County (2-9), and Greenup County (4-7). They also defeated Sheldon Clark (1-10) and Holmes (2-9).

It wasn't a great season, I never said it was. Given the sheduke and how things panned out, it wasn't a completely dissapointing season though. Do they need to improve, yes. Can they, yes.

 

Basketball is a different story though. The football team wasn't terrible, the basketball team is. Can the basketball team improve, I'm not so sure, unless more kids decide they want to play.

 

Your trying to compare apples and apples. The football team wasn't spectacular, but they did post a winning record against good competition. The basketball team has no chance at posting a winning record.

Obviously the talent level of the basketball team is down. But the talent level in the school is not. So why such a big drop off in basketball, why don't the other athletes in the school want to play basketball all of a sudden?

 

I mean, unless there have been reports of Biggs being legitimately abusive toward his players (and I've heard none), I don't think he can really be blamed for kids quitting. If kids are quitting because they're being constantly insulted or not being allowed water breaks that's one thing. But if kids are quitting just because they don't particularly get along with the coach or don't like his rules I don't have a lot of sympathy. I sat on benches with guys I absolutely couldn't stand, and I did it out of loyalty to my team and school. With all do respect, if Coach Biggs has 8 district championships and 5 region finals appearances and a trip to Rupp, and Ashland is having a bad season because a bunch of Ashland students and parents decided they'd rather not play for him, it sounds like it's Ashland's problem, not his.

5 wins against teams with a combined record of 11-43 is not "posting a winning record against good competition". The only good competition that Ashland defeated is Raceland. Ashland plays Raceland at Putnam each year (never at Raceland). Raceland is a 1A school - compared to 4A for Ashland. Ashland should defeat Raceland every year.

 

And the reason he doesn't have a 16th Region title is simple. Someone (Fleming, Rowan, Elliot) has just had a better team every year that he's been in it. Brad Carr and Mike Code have had the same problem in the 10th and no one's calling for their heads. I'm sorry but if Ashland fires Buddy Biggs, I think they're fools. I think they'll seriously damage their program and have no one to blame but themselves.

I have to disagree.. If there was never a problem before with multi sport athletes wanting to play before but there is now, then that is a potential problem.

 

If kids are told they have to cut their hair because they have braids, that's up to the coach, its his rule. We don't live in the 50's, so why do we need such a rule. Does long hair impede your ability to play basketball? It sure didn't hurt a particular player on the football field, maybe because he was wearing a helmet, I dunno?

I guess I should have said they posted a winning record while playing good competition. They did post a winning record, and also played a top team in the state a respectable game. That's something Biggs squad has not and will not be able to do.

I stand by it, it may be a difference in culture, but if the best reason you can come up with for not playing is you don't want to cut your hair then that's your decision but you definitely didn't get 'run off'. At pretty much every program I've seen athletes usually have to adhere to special rules set by their coaches including ones regarding personal appearance. Pretty much every coach I've worked under made kids cut their hair, keep a clean shave, cover up their tattoos, and wear a shirt and tie to games during the regular season. It just comes with the territory. If Biggs has these rules, he's likely had them for a long time, which means he has no obligation to change them now. If kids don't wanna play ball bad enough to buy a $9 set of hair trimmers that's their business, but no one owes them an apology.

It would take much more than a couple of athletic kids to make this a competitive team. Granted, 1 win through January is tough to swallow but would people feel different if they had say 6 wins?

At this point it seems that the kids have given up on him. Once you lose your kids, you lose your team. Which is when blowouts and 2-5 win seasons start happening.

And I don't disagree with what you are saying. My point is there was no saving this season when Thornton moved to Cleveland, it was going to be a bad season. When Miller broke his foot the entire situation unraveled. I think Biggs has to be held responsible but his body of work grants him another chance. Jmo

 

And I don't necessarily think the kids gave up on him they just gave up. Is that on the coach? Probably so but there are extenuating circumstances.
