At a traditionally good school, get most coaches fired on the spot?

 

I ask, because thinking about college sports, it would definetly put a coach on the hot seat. If they had not had previous accomplishments at said school, it would likely lead to them being fired.

 

So how much leadway do you give high school coaches before deciding they are never going to meet the expectations of the fans and program?

As a Henry Clay grad, I say as long as they are teaching the kids how to play and are examples of integrity, they keep their job. High school coaches do not control the talent level - unless you are at Trinity, St. Xavier, LexCath, among others - so why fire a coach who has no talent if he/she is doing thing right?

What if there is talent, but said coach has ran it off? Would that change things any? Or do you keep the coach and blame the kids not wanting to be a part of the program as lack of work ethic?

Complicated question. If the coach is REALLY running them off, a principal should get the facts. If the coach is doing a good job of teaching, is ethically running the program and kids are leaving because they are spoiled or too lazy to work hard, as principal I tell said players to hit the road. If coach is not doing a good job teaching the sport and/or is unethical, that is a sign something is wrong and change might be in order. Too many variables in your question. What school we talking about?

I'd vote for cutting Coach Biggs some slack. He's in his 9th season as head coach and ordinarily has pretty competitive teams, and although this year is an anomaly with them presently sitting at 1-21, his track record would indicate that he's a pretty good coach. Perhaps the talent level is dramatically down this year. It certainly is odd and has everyone scratching their heads, but maybe it's just one of those years.

You have stated on the Greenup County thread that you have friends who live on the Boyd County and Greenup County border. You are clearly speaking about Ashland.

 

You don't hear of that happening much, honestly. There are various reasons other than athletics that some parents do choose to put their kids in the other local school systems, if they are able though.

 

A friend of mine has two kids in grade school, they live right on the border of Greenup and Boyd Counties. From their house South Shore (Greenup County) is about a 25-30 minute drive depending on traffic, 1 hour plus by bus. In relation, you can get to Russell, Raceland, Fairview, Rose Hill, Ashland, or Boyd county in 15 minutes or less. It's a weird geographic setup for that district, but I understand the reasoning behind it. For that reason, along with academics, my friends kids will not be attending Greenup County.

 

No other team in your area has the tradition that Ashland has and yet has fallen so far.

I'd say that you're right. I don't live anywhere near Ashland, but was pretty sure that I had a good idea who he was talking about.

Ok, you guys win. The reason I thought about this thread is because of Ashlands recent issues. But I didn't start it solely for Ashland, or to bash coach Biggs.

 

I am really curious what it takes for a coach to get fired from a traditionally rich school, while not meeting the expectations the program and fans have. What would it take to get a coach fire from any of the traditional powers in the state?

 

Just curious. I know in football the traditional powers woukd put up with none of the above. What makes basketball different?

 

Would zero regional championships do it over a 10 year period? A 5 win season or less season? Athletes that play for a year or less and never return? Every other sport in said school succeding, but true athletes from the other sports not wanting to play basketball.

The football team was 5-4 in the regular season and finished at 6-5. This record does not indicate that the talent level on the football team was very good according to the traditional expectations of the Tomcats.
