Any advice for cancelling DirecTv?

Featured Replies

Am going to be making that call soon and don't want to end up on the line for 45 minutes( or whatever it was) on that YouTube video that guy made of himself trying to cancel DirecTv. Have been with them for 4 years and up until the past 5 months or so they have given me whatever I've wanted to keep me, but since the AT&T merger they will not give an inch on anything like they used to, they are hard to talk to and don't seem to care if you are a customer or not. Our local cable system has all the channels I want and like, along with Lexington local channels for $20 cheaper, just me making the call is all I need to do,any tips?

Call, tell them your canceling and aren't interested in anything they're trying to offer.

At the end of the day they're required to at least attempt to get you to stay. DirecTV has outstanding customer service. Shouldn't be difficult at all.

Just make sure you aren't locked into a contract with them. They tend to give very little in that situation as they have leverage. If you own your equipment or are no longer on a contract, they'll be eager to work with you, just be aware any new deals will likely put you into a service agreement.

The AT&T Merger hasn't even went through so I doubt that's why they're unwilling to work with you.

All I can add is do it. Get out ASAP. Customer service is terrible and if it rained a lil hard our reception went out. So frustrating and not worth it, IMO.

I rarely have reception problems. I pay a little extra for the the protection plan, and as soon as I start getting reception problems, I have someone come out and repoint my dish.

My bill was already over $150 per month. They wouldn't even come check it out without a $50 service charge. That is until I told them I was dropping them. Then they said we can come fix it. They still send me "great" offers in the mail. No Thanks! My local cable cost a lot less and hasn't went out for a second in about 3 months so far.

Granted I've only had DirectTV for six months but I've been very pleased.

Now, Cincinnati Bell, on the other hand...

If you are not 2+ years out from a new contract or any program change with Directv, you are bound. Leaving them will cost you $100.00.

I had been with them for over 12 years and loved their programing. As their prices went up and up, I called and told them I was being pursued by the local cable company who would cut my combined package of cable television plus high speed internet by nearly $100/month for the first year. Directv offered me $10 off monthly.

When I left (remember after 12 years), they sent me a billing invoice for $100. After complaining, a Directv representative told me I had changed my programing (I added a high definition box in my master bedroom) 22 months ago and it created a new two year contract. I absolutely refused to pay it and Directv filed it against my credit report.

It will be a black mark on my credit rating for a total of seven years. Directv is a bunch of money grubbing dirt bags.

Even though I think they have the best programing, I WILL NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH THEM AGAIN!

They are really no different from any other service provider, tv, cell phone, internet, whatever. Those contracts help reduce churn from other providers offering sweetheart deals to switch. The problem with those deals is those sweetheart prices go away after a year and you're right back in the same boat. The whole industry is full of money grubbers. I've said it before, once sports programming gets figured out, I'm cutting the tv cord for a streaming service.

So you broke a 2 year contract before it was up, they charged you the cancelation fees that are outlined in the contract, you refused to pay, and they're the ones who did something wrong?

I've had them for 3 years. They're far and away the best provider out there. Signal has went out maybe 3-4 times due to bad storms, but never for an extended period of time, and their customer service is far and away the best of the bunch.

Cincinnati Bell is atrocious.

While I was younger 19 or so my mom moved back to KY. after working at a job in WV. As a gift to her since I was staying there from time to time and my brother was living with her I got her direct tv hooked up in my name. A couple years go by no big deal I had moved out, but kept up the bill. I was at work one evening and my brother called and was wanting to watch something on PPV UFC I think, but they wouldn't let him add the charge with the account being in my name. I called direct tv with him on the phone and we got everything switched over account wise from my name to his. No problem whatsoever;

A couple years go by he moves out and one afternoon I get a call from direct tv, my mom rarely at home as she works constantly had let the bill lapse. They tried to tell me I had to pay 250 dollars or something, I tried to be nice to the representative stating the bill hadn't been in my name for 2-3 years whatever, but they insisted I pay it then. I'm sure they've put a mark on my credit score, but I'll never pay them.
