Inside the 16th Region 1/5/15

Featured Replies

Top 10

1. Boyd County (11-1) The Lions continue to impress. A huge win on the road over Rowan County vaults them into the #1 spot this week. Conner Gauze and Bobby Anderson provide a potent inside-out punch for the Lions.

2. Rowan County (10-3) The Vikings had an impressive AIT run behind the play of sharp shooter Ryne Callahan. His running mates Larry Whelan and Justin Graham are playing well as evidenced by Graham's 25 points in a loss to Boyd County. An inside presence would greatly enhance the Vikings title chances.

3. Elliott County (7-4) The Lions captured the Stultz Pharmacy Classic at Greenup County. They disposed of two district foes on the way to the title. Hunter Holbrook was impressive in the tourney and the Lions got great efforts from several other players as well.

4. Morgan County (8-2) Jordan Perry continues to show why many feel he is the best player in the region. The Cougars fell to Elliott County but bounced back with a hard fought two-point win over Greenup County Friday. Holden Redparth is Robin to Batman for the Cougars.

5. Raceland (9-3) The Rams make the biggest jump in this week's poll. This athletic group is piling up wins in bunches. Junior Tyler Morris and a trio of seniors Connor Messer, Rodney Vance, and Jacob Blair are quickly becoming a region darkhorse for 2015.

6. East Carter (5-8) The Raiders are a dangerous team. They stretched #1 Boyd County to double overtime in the AIT. Strong guard play from Connor Greene and Cameron Sparks continue to lead the Raiders.

7. Fleming County (5-7) Lamont Taylor is doing a great job in his first year with the Panthers. Wilder Williams is a top 5 player and is helping lead the Panthers to surprising five win start.

8. Lewis County (5-8) The Lions have lost seven of their last eight games. Coach Hampton usually has his teams ready for the postseason so don't count them out yet. Trenton Walker is becoming a leader for this squad with his tenacious play.

9. West Carter (5-6) The young Comets are starting to hit their stride, A win over Greenup County highlighted their holiday games. 6'8" sophomore Ben Jordan is a player to watch as the season unfolds.

10. Greenup County (3-10) The Musketeers are definitely the region's most puzzling squad. Injuries and illness plagued the team over the holiday break. Jair Jackson continues to put up big numbers along with Gage Hughes. A healthy GC squad will be dangerous come February.

Thanks, GB32! Nice work!

I would not change anything with that top 10 ranking. Great job GB32! I also think Rowan, Morgan, Greenup, and Boyd win their district titles this year. That 63rd seems pretty balanced and Raceland probabaly has the edge. But Greenup county is a lot better team than their record indicates and by the season's end I see Coach Tackett getting them to all play better team ball. Elliott county and Morgan county will battle it out all year, and I believe East Carter could play really well and knock one of them out of the regionals with an upset. Still think Ashland gets to 10 wins by seasons end, and somehow makes it to Morehead State come regional time. With Fleming county being down this year I think Rowan walks through those districts. Menifee county could push Fleming to be that runner up to go on to MSU. That's my 2 cents.

I will be surprised if Ashland isn't 0-15 by weeks end. What a mess.

So, you think Ashland is gonna go 10-7 the rest of the way? I see 7 games I don't think they have much chance in at all.

I can see the 6 games you are talking about, GRC, Mason, Boyd, Elliott, Rowan, and Johnson Central. And I assume you are throwing in Fleming county in that group. I am counting on Ashland to beat Russell twice, Rose Hill twice, Fairview, then again in the districts, West Carter, East Carter (I know they lost to them by 1 point earlier) And I know nothing about the Ohio nor West Virginia team. So yes, I think it is very possible that Ashland somehow finds a way to get 10 wins. There are so many iffy games on their remaining schedule and I am as shocked as anyone at how they have struggled mightily this season. But I do think it is still possible for them to win several of those games. Maybe not 10 but 8 anyway.

Ironton? Spring Valley?

I was thinking more like 2 wins for Ashland

Ha ha. Rose Hill are two for sure. And if East Carter only beat Ashland by 1 point I 'd say Ashland beats West Carter then. And Russell is terrible this year. Lost to Morgan co by 37. Yes Morgan county has a good team this year but 37?? That tells me as bad as Ashland is that they will still get two W's against Russell. Maybe less than ten, but I think closer to 10 than 2. Never thought I'd see the day that an Ashland team started out 0-13. Unreal!

Two more? They haven't won any yet, lol.

No, 2 wins total. They'll have a chance to win maybe 6 but they haven't shown it yet.

I'm thinking 5. Maybe.

The only for sure win I see is Rose Hill, once. I think the other game with Rose Hill will he up for grabs.
