December 5, 201411 yr Perhaps you meant something else with these posts. FWIW I was being sarcastic with my "police never get arrested" comment. I certainly didn't mean they NEVER get arrested. In my opinion, if someone is killed by a police officer, it should automatically go to trial. Every time. If the officer is justified, that should come out in the proceedings, just like if he/she was guilty. For some of these incidents to never even go to trial REALLY bothers me. I'm not saying lock them all up the second they fire their gun. But daggone it, let's look into it a little more than it seems they do on the surface.

No offense, but that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read on the internet. You think the Florence police officer recently involved in a shooting should be arrested and put on trial? We should take money out of his family's pocket because he defended himself from an idiot with an AK? Really? People that do nothing more than go to work as a police officer...if they get attacked and someone tries to kill them, they should automatically go to trial if they defend their own (or someone else's) life? REALLY?

REALLY? No offense taken. And yep, I do. Cases like the one you referenced are easy. Case open, case closed. Do you not think ANYTHING could have been gained from the Brown/Wilson case going to trial? We couldn't have learned ANYTHING from the choke hold case going to trial?

Do you not think ANYTHING could have been gained from the Brown/Wilson case going to trial? We couldn't have learned ANYTHING from the choke hold case going to trial? That's not how it works in this country. You don't arrest people and put them on trial when there isn't enough evidence to even get through a grand jury. A friend of mine is a police officer. This friend of mine was shot while on duty, and killed the person who shot him. Do you think he should go to jail and through a trial for that? You said all... You do realize in some places, even if the person is arrested, the case still has to go through a grand jury before trail...right?

Loss of life is a big deal to me... I think every case where there is a loss of life should be heavily investigated. Fine tooth comb type investigation. If a trial isn't the right way to do that, then I think we as a society need to figure out another way, because I just don't think some of these cases are getting a serious enough look... That's just my two cents. I hope your friend has recovered from his/her injury. :thumb:
December 5, 201411 yr IMO the process of having a grand jury hearing is sufficient. I think it is likely that a jury would have the same finding so the result would be a lot of time money wasted with people still unhappy with the outcome if the policeperson is exonerated. What people NEED to understand during these times is that this is becoming a war, and it will not go away if our leaders do not step up and encourage people to behave rationally. IF I am a policeperson, and I am on shift, and I am threatened, and I have my life to protect...then I will do it...end of story. If that means, if in a moment of doubt, I draw my gun on a 6'5" 300 pound man of any color coming at me, then the trigger will be pulled. This particular thread is different. I wonder if the victim was ever even seen since the gun was discharged, I guess not at a target. What I see out of our community is a growing challenge to the authority of the policeperson and authorities, and this MUST stop. If this stops, I will bet my enormous fortune that the incidents like this will diminish, AND policepeople will be LESS afraid and LESS threatened. It is not all on the police!

Every case is investigated, and the grand jury is made up of randomly selected civilians just like you and me.

A grand jury can only indict based on the charges presented to them... Is that correct? (Honestly don't know).

December 5, 201411 yr It sure doesn't seem like they handled this per policy. I cant believe they didn't radio in that they shot someone. Not only does it violate policy, but it violates common sense.
January 25, 201610 yr Author The trial has begun for the officer that killed Akai Gurley. His defense team says that he was too distraught to render any aid to Gurley while the prosecution says that he was worried about being fired. http://www.buzzfeed.com/maryanngeorgantopoulos/police-officer-was-too-upset-after-shooting-to-help-akai-gur#.jxykEqy6O
