The Federal government has not passed a budget in years. To be more specific the Democratically controlled Senate has not passed a budget or voted the House version. Its all done via continuing resolutions.

There is no funding to support Syrian rebels or other things done over the past few years but somehow there is money for that.

Cmon Rockmom , really ? On Friday, President Obama added his signature to legislation that will cut $8.7 billion in food stamp benefits over the next 10 YEARS . Meaning the cuts will prob never stay in upcoming budgets . Nothing more than hot air . hear is some raw facts that wont bend :

Among the roughly 80 means-tested federal welfare programs, the food stamp program is the second-largest and the fastest growing. Nearly 1 in 6 Americans now receives the benefit. Food stamp spending has more than DOUBLED since the start of the Obama presidency, and has quadrupled since 2001,” writes the Republican side of the Senate Budget Committee.

“Total spending on food stamps is now projected to be more than $760 billion over the next 10 years. By contrast, between 2003 and 2012, the nation spent less than $480 billion on food stamps,” the statement adds.

getslow- might have been a rough decade but the 5 years from 97 to 2003 were rather explosive. I see a crooked line still heading upwards .

I'll be sure to pass along your thoughts to the people I know who no longer qualify (like my mother) or have had all but a few dollars cut from their allotment each month...like my uncle and his family.

Is this a true cut or is it a reduction in future increases? I can't tell from the article.

I'll see what more I can find that explains it. I will say that when my Dad died, my mom qualified for a small amount in SNAP benefits. This year she no longer qualifies for any. And my uncle went from a couple hundred per month to $53. So, I would say at least a portion is real cuts.

Yep , I surely played a role in the reduction of your families benefits .

I didn't say I'd blame you for them. I said I'd pass along your sentiments.

The official 'budget' outlook posted at the WH website shows all departments reducing future actual expenditures except two - treasury (due to mandatory bond (interest) payments to the Fed and China on the debt) and HHS (due to ACA).

Every other department is projected to go down in actual dollars. Without these projected the reductions the outlook would not even be in the ball park of viability.

to shed a little more light on the work of the NIH : OBVIOUSLY SO IMPORTANT THAT A 5 % cut is purely draconian ! ---Your New Age Tax Dollars: Meditation, Menopause, and Massage

The following are just a few of the studies the NIH funded in 2011 where information is currently publically available:

Massage in Rabbits. - $386,000 – Ohio State University. The official title of the study is “Massage Therapy in Eccentric Exercise Induced Muscle Weakness and Inflammation.” The principal investigator confirmed with me that it is as it read – a study applying massage to rabbits to try to figure out what is the best massage duration.

The Role of Breathing in Meditation. $453,000 – University of California San Francisco. Yes, nearly half a million dollars of taxpayers money to tell us that breathing is important in meditation. I predict breathing is important in most things…

Losing weight through meditation. $1,158,000 - University of California San Francisco. The study, entitled “Metabolic and Immunologic Effects of Meditation” seeks to find out if one meditates, will they shed pounds. My guess is if you meditate near your fridge, you probably won’t. Add this to the $480,000 to study “Yoga for Therapy of the Metabolic Syndrome” University of California San Francisco, and we can see a new Meditate and Yoga Your Way to Slim video soon.

Dismantling Mindfulness: Contributions of Attention vs. Acceptance. $134,000 to Brown University for something that sounds pretty darn flaky.

Structural, Functional, and Behavioral Effects of Meditation – Mass. General Hospital - $438,265. This study take 90 stressed out people and tries to figure out how meditation makes them relax.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Cognitive Function in Stress and Aging - Washington University - $200,640.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction as and Adjunctive Treatment for Psoriasis – - $533,074 – University of Rochester.

Mechanisms of Meditation - $320,00 - Emory University.

In reading over all of the NIH grants, it seems the NIH is very interested in hot flashes, spending more than $1 million in 2011 alone studying New Age treatments for hot flashes, including:

Integral Yoga on Hot Flashes – $108,790 – Wake Forest

Acupuncture in the Treatment of Hot Flashes - $30,420 – Wake Forest

Non-Specific Effects of Acupuncture in the Treatment of Hot Flashes - $400,680 Wake Forest

Hypnosis for Hot Flashes - $484,260 - Baylor University

Slow-Paced Breathing for the Treatment of Hot Flashes -$357,577 - University California San Francisco

The Placebo Effect of Acupuncture: Hot Flashes as a Clinical Model - $131,895 - University of Pennsylvania

Bout a cool 2 million for goofy looks into goofy treatments .

True , now quite interrupting me while I polish my horns on my head , and get back to torturing the kittens . Nearly a million tax payer bucks for 2 studies using hypnosis and " slow paced breathing" for treatment of hot flashes -- Think how many food stamps that could have provided Mom and your uncle .

Sure proves post # 28 correct.
