JV football is not a true indication for the future. In a program like ST.X they have three distinct levels, varsity, JV and Freshman. The JV program should be last in importance. Your Varsity should come first and then having a great freshman staff and development system. Your JV team should be for those who need further development for future varsity play and those kids who will probably never see very much varsity time. ST.X has may kids but true numbers in quality players is a different story. There seems to be an increase in better programs in Louisville. Teams like Male, Manual, Trinity, DeSales, Central, CAL and some others all have a good share of very good talent. I think the days of Trinity and St.X having all the talent are gone. Which is a good thing. As for ST.X, I would not worry, a great program with great tradition, getting down to some old fashioned St.X basics could cause problems for people. Looking for some hard nosed football from X.

It is an indicator of how much talent you have in the program.

For St. X or Trinity to EVER lose in JV to schools that are not on their numbers level is a tragic mishap within those programs. Both schools boast rosters of 99 Varsity kids, almost all of which are Jr.'s and Sr.'s...which means at the minimum, there are probably around 70-90 Fr. and Soph.'s. When you have numbers like those and can't beat the daylights out of everyone who doesn't have those numbers, it is a failing of the division of responsibilities within the coaching staff. That St. X has lost to De Sales and Central is a BAD sign, regardless of level.

That is revisionist history. St.X is one of the 3 largest programs in the state. The JV level has always been important to them in the past. They have the numbers on the roster to be loaded in JV every year. Most of us aren't going to cut them any slack now that things aren't going their way.

Yes, this is JV team that played and lost 3 games within 7 days: lost at home 13-19 to DeSales on 9/15; lost 17-24 to Moeller in Cincy on 9/20; and lost to Central, at Central, on 9/22.

 

Didn't see the Central game, but understand that Soph QB Desmond Ridder didn't play (minor injury from Moeller game).

 

If Ridder didn't play then who played QB. Was it the Junior or another Soph.

Not cutting St. X any slack and it is not revisionist history . I'm just imparting my take on the situation. I believe that at St.X and Trinity for years have designed their program with Varsity, Freshman and JV in line of importance. If you look at Trinity from 1980-99 they lost games at the JV level to more than a few schools. Today there are more programs that are good high school teams that are establishing a strong, long term system. The talent pool is being distributed around town with kids realizing that the private schools are not the only place to play football and get recognized. That is why, even with large numbers of players, the talent isn't centralized in the private schools. Having 80 kids at the JV level does not mean you have talent. Male and Manual are loaded with talent that would have gone to the private schools in earlier years. This could be due to financial issues coupled with the building of programs at these schools. As far as Central and DeSales beating St.X on the JV level, it is a good stepping stone for their programs. There coaching staffs however, must be careful in putting to much stock in a JV game because it is not a true indicator for the future. Good coaches will use it as a tool, and wielded correctly can be a great asset in motivation and recruiting kids to the school. It is a good thing when we have good coaches and multiple good programs for these young men to be taught football, discipline, work ethic and life.

JV is important. Some kids are JV starters only to be replaced by someone younger on the varsity level next season. JV provides repetitions for players and opportunities for coaches to adjust schemes.

 

I do agree that JV is last in the pecking order behind varsity and Frosh. But again, JV should be all about the reps and scheme adjustments

It's usually about 30 Srs, 30 Jrs, and 40-45 Sophs. Freshmen usually have between 80-110. At least for T.

All kidding aside, the loss of Des was entirely too much for the JV Tigers to overcome.
