Best Defenders?

Featured Replies

Kenney in defense probably best defender in no ky.

Agree

IMO. Jacob Hensley at NCC is probably the best defender in NKY. No disrespect to Kenney. He's a quality player as well.

No disrespect to Hensley but this is not even close. No probably about it, Parker Kenney is the best defender in N. Ky., hands down.

Really don't have a strong opinion either way, but Hensley was co defensive player of the year with Davis-Roberts last season, first team all-state East...and it's not even close???

I thought I'd create a new thread.

OK.... go.

good thread. I look forward to some informed responses. Unfortunately, I am not in a position to be able to comment since I am not familiar with many of the teams.

I would like to ask a question. What criteria do you use to judge this? In other words, what makes a player a good defender? I am not trying to take this thread in a different direction, I just want to know what you are looking for and I will keep my eyes open as the season progresses.

Keep an eye out for Freshman Carter Kunstek--St Henry's starting varsity center back.

Carter starts varsity? Nice. I am a fan of the kid. Great personality. Wants to be good. Willing to work.

There is obviously an amount of subjectivity to who you think the best defender is simply because there are no stats involved. Obviously you want someone that can stop an opposing player 1v1 but someone who also possesses a lot of technical skill that enables them to play the ball out of the back and start the offense for his team. Someone good at winning balls in the air, fast, tenacious, anticipates well and technically skilled. Parker Kenney is simply the best at whatever metric you look at in my opinion.

If you are unsure of what you are talking about, it's easy to simply go back to the "all star" list and pick a name from that and throw it out there. I think in previous threads it was agreed upon for the most part that all star teams are seldom a selection of the truly best players in the area. I'm sure we'll have more of those names on this year's list.

Those teams are selected were selected by the Northern Ky. coaches and the KY High School Coaches Association. I don't have a strong opinion either way simply because I haven't seen either one enough to have one. One would to assume the coaches know something on the subject.

At the risk of picking on players named to that team, I'll stop right here. The teams are hardly inclusive of the best players in the region and I'll leave it at that.

You're probably right. I'm not sure what the coaches were thinking.

Yes, I probably am..

It has been my experience that the PC stuff has creeped in the voting.......There seems to be a push to try to have diversity of teams and focusing on Seniors for the voting. When, in some cases, two players from the same team would be way ahead of one from another.....

It's tough.....The best player on an average to under average team looks better and is focused on more than tha good player from very good team. Although the Good player on the better team is probably way ahead of the other in talent......

An example.....there was a player on Holmes (don't remember his name) that was truly the only player that could control the ball. For that reason, he had the ball 60 -70 percent of the time. If you were to put him on that other good team, he probably starts, but definitely isn't in the top 5........but he gets a vote to increase the number of teams in the list....

Does that make sense? It is early.

Shockingly, I agree with most of what oldtimebaseball84 has posted today!

That's 1.

What he is saying is exactly my point. Every team gets represented in some way for the most part it seems, very reminiscent of those early coach-pitch "all star" baseball teams where every team got 2-3 all-star spots.

Welcome to the dark side.

It certainly would not be known as the bright side.....
