August 14, 201412 yr Dumb. You get the best you can, treat them well and hope they decide to stick. However, I want a cop with just as much common sense as "book lernt'" smarts, and they don't always go hand in hand.
August 15, 201412 yr The article is from 2000 and only lists one specific department. Does anyone know if this is a hiring practice throughout any other police departments?
August 15, 201412 yr ..... The funny thing, to me, is you have to be exceptionally bright to pass the FBI exam. 5 sections, with two of them being calculus level math. I realize they aren't exactly the same, but the mindset shouldn't be so drastically different in my opinion. Only hiring folks with "average intelligence" as cops is DUMB.
August 15, 201412 yr If I were his lawyer I would argue the IQ test was a fluke, or merely lucky guesses. I would state that he couldn't be that bright if he wanted to be a cop. What intelligent person would want to put their life on the line everyday they go to work, and receive such little pay for doing so?
August 18, 201412 yr A man whose bid to become a police officer was rejected after he scored too high on an intelligence test has lost an appeal in his federal lawsuit against the city. Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, took the exam in 1996 and scored 33 points, the equivalent of an IQ of 125. But New London police interviewed only candidates who scored 20 to 27, on the theory that those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training. Most Cops Just Above Normal The average score nationally for police officers is 21 to 22, the equivalent of an IQ of 104, or just a little above average. August 19, 201412 yr It is a weird practice. I understand not wanting to hire someone with a ton of experience or a very good resume for a job that is well below what there experience says they should have. But an IQ test alone isn't a reason to not higher them. If they don't have a good resume not many great jobs going to hire you on iq alone.
