You are talking about the Boyd Co Suns who were basically the same team as the EKY Allstars. The Suns did have an illegal player back in the 5th grade and they got caught. Then the team changed names picked up a few other players and became Eky. The Eky team also had a kid that was found to be illegal that suspicously disappeard in the 9th grade. The Allstars were a great team I give you that and they did play great team ball and very intelligent basketball. But they did have a kid that started for them that wasnt legal.

The kids name was Billy he was their starting center and wasnt there at the nationals in I think the 9th grade. The team said that he just didnt want to play anymore but it was later when we were told that he wasnt legal. As for the Rockets, they never played the Tarheels tough not one AAU team from NKY ever did. PERIOD! The Central Kentucky Warriors beat them in their 10th grade year but that was after they totally changed their lineup. As for James getting players from other areas, he got a kid named Mark (Bradford maybe?) from S Laurel who didnt matter much to the team they needed size off the bench and thats all he was. Later on James started picking up kids from Cincy to play but that was after the time we are refering to.

Bottom Line is, if the Tarheels starting lineup consisting of Jefferson, Hester, Hill, Edmonson and Rice. (also add in Arrez Henderson and Braeon Avery) Would have stayed together and went to Holmes like they were going to they would have went to state 3 straight years and would have won at least 1 state championship. They played South Laurel's AAU team several times with most of South Laurels school players on that team and beat them easily every time.

I'll stand by ALWAYS played them close, unless you think a 10 point win is a blowout; but agree no other NKY team did. But then seldom did a NKY team play the Rockets close either!!

Beg to differ as I recall they played several times, usually at state or in tourneys, and the spread was between 6 and maybe 12-14 max; usually in one quarter as the Rockets consistantly played the roster, while the 'Heels played the starters.

 

Again taking nothing away from the Tarheels and their accomplishments, but you must have been elsewhere if remember blowouts between these teams!!

 

PS: I believe virtually all the kids from both teams are still playing HS hoops into their senior years, except for a couple who decided to quit and concentrate on football.

Speaking of illegal players (whether the kid for eky was or not)...the year that the TarHeels went down to nationals, didn't the team that knocked them out end up making it to the championship and winning or finishing runner up but end up getting disqualified for using 3 older players? And if I'm not mistaken that team still only beat the Heels by less than 5 points.

The only billy that ever played for the stars was Billy Blanton, who is a upcoming senior at Boyd County High School and a very good player

You are 100% correct BGGreen. The Rockets, coached by Pat Ryan, played the Tarheels at least 4 times from the 5th thru the 8th grade and never lost by more than 10 points. I know this for a fact!

Well if you guys know James Pouncy the coach of the Tarheels ask him about the Rocket games then. I was there for every state tourney and have seen them play the Rockets a few times but never remember the Rockets ever really having a chance. Dont know the exact point spread like you guys seem to remember but I do remember never worrying about the Rockets beating the Tarheels ever. As for the EKY Allstars all I can say is the following year at state after Billy didnt show up for the nationals all the talk at the KBA was that he wasnt legal. I know he is a Senior to be this year, just going from what was told to me a few times. They also that year didnt even have a team. All the kids split up and played for different teams, everybody but Billy who wasnt there.
