August 20, 201412 yr I've heard the TMC really likes the guy they have playing now. Honestly, the move to TMC makes me wonder how much Kuntz really likes football. Wasn't Kuntz going to Western Kentucky or is he going play a year at TMC and transfer?
August 20, 201412 yr Wasn't Kuntz going to Western Kentucky or is he going play a year at TMC and transfer? He had a Grayshirt offer to Western, which means he wouldn't have reported until January 2015. The ability to stay close to home, to start his career right away are some of the reasons he might have chose TMC over Western. Transferring now at this point makes little sense, since he would have to sit out a year (you can transfer down a division and play right away, but not up or laterally).
August 20, 201412 yr There is no doubt that this is a way to boost enrollment numbers. I am a little surprised that the football team does this because they have a strong program and have plenty of talent to choose from in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area. Usually schools with down, or not well established football programs will take anyone that still wants to lace up the pads and play to get numbers and hope they find some talent. TMC does not have this issue. I know attrition is very high at smaller college programs and I would be surprised if 25 would still be playing their senior year out of the 90 they bring in. Not sure how you would conduct practice with that many players. This isn't just a Thomas More thing. Most D3 (and NAIA for that matter...just look at Georgetown's roster) use football as an enrollment driver, whether that school is a powerhouse or not. Attrition is high, as many players realize the amount of work you need to put in is no different than playing big time football, and with the NFL usually not even a remote possibility, kids just quit, especially since there is no scholarship in hand giving you a reason to stay on. So in addition to driving enrollment, high numbers ensures you have the necessary depth to field a competitive team.

I believe he wanted to stay home all along but felt pressure to try and go D1 or as close as possible. For the record, whatever choice HE made is the right choice and I wish him nothing but the best! One of my favorite high school football players to watch play.
August 20, 201412 yr I have heard 30 or more have already called it a day after a week of practice. Sounds about right. Should make getting onto the field that much easier.
August 20, 201412 yr Sounds about right. Should make getting onto the field that much easier. Yep, only 130 on the roster now. With another 60 or 70 coming in every year after that. Piece of cake.
August 21, 201412 yr Wonder how many of the 30 are now enrolled as students? I'd guess not many. As for you rjs, there won't be 130 there in 2 weeks and your 60 or 70 next year will be 15 or 20 by the time the season starts. No logic in trying to convince people that a D3 roster is 'stacked' with talent.
August 21, 201412 yr For some reason I was thinking Magness was the starter. Magness is backup and is used in certain situations

It's not D1, and for the most part it's not even close (although there might be a handful of them that areclose to D1 level talent on the roster). But everybody else on that team was likely one of the best if not the best player on their high school team......in other words, there are a bunch of really good football players. To say there is no talent on a top 20 D3 team is simply not true. There's talent....what's missing is ideal size, speed, or some other measurable. If it were really so easy to get on the field, there wouldn't be so many of them that quit.

So you think that 50 high school guys show up and quit because there is so much talent they think they'll never see the field? I'd say it's more like they went to the D3 because they weren't ready to give up their dream and then realize that it's time to quit. Competition doesn't scare guys away. Lack to desire or the need to 'move on' is what makes the difference.

Lack to desire or the need to 'move on' is what makes the difference. Yes, I would say that's part of the reason. You don't see how all the practice time, and other hard work and effort might not be worth the effort if you realize you have either no or very little chance to see the field?? Trust me, you know pretty quickly if you have the chops to play or not. Not many people are willing to spend 4 years as a practice dummy. And yes, I'm sure you are right as well, there certainly are those that decide it's simply time to move on. Neither of those issues are related to too much competition or being scared off by it. They give it a shot, and it doesn't work out...either your good enough and don't want to play anymore, or you find out you're not good enough to play at that level. I just happen think there are more of the latter.Again, I never said TMC (or any D3 school) is just loaded with top end talent. And I'm sure, that there are 15, 20 or even a few more that try to play, that don't have any business being out there. I'm not sure why you believe that there just aren't that many talented kids playing D3 football....there really are. I'm not sure why you don't believe there isn't much talent or that it's any less of a grind to play D3 football.
August 21, 201412 yr Correction: Magness moved to tight end. Kuntz backup. There was another Magness on defense but he is no longer on the team
