I get a kick out of hearing all of the 'Read Option' stuff, then listening to these old school Triple/Belly Option guys & they go, "Umm...last I checked, we all READ people". Mind you, as most of us know...the spread zone read option vs. the old school triple/belly option are all reading people; it's just a matter of who they are reading. Both have a give/pull & in the case of ole' Chip....has a pitch off of it (did a ton of it out of his 2 back gun sets back when they had Dixon. I'm sure they have in the last couple years, but I really remember them doing it with Dixon).

Certain names are just sexier, and it's ALLLLLLLLL smoke and mirrors.

For the record, most know I'm an old school fan....but, when Texas Tech/Washington State/Hawai'i are on....I watch them more intently than I do our service academies, GA Tech and GA Southern...but, they all lose out to my Irish of course. Mike Leach fan here...probably my favorite coach in the game.

See what you did oldrambler. Told you..........

MY Man!!!!!!!!

The bold is the truth if it's ever been spoken.

There are only so many things a team can do currently, and it seems that re-inventing older styles of play is popular. It's not like you can re-evnet the Screen, or the Draw. It would seem that about all that can be done, has been done.

Like you have said before, if a coach took over Ohio State and said, "we are going to run the Single Wing", he would get an armed escort out of Columbus. But, if he says, "we are going to run a 'wide open' read option offense with three wide", he's an innovator.

It's a great offense, and one where the same schemes are being used today at the HS and College levels even though they might not actually be "Wing T".

I heard these exact words come from Gus Malzahn in the Spring following Auburn's National Championship when Gus was the OC there. He told a room full of 200 people this at the beginning of his talk:

"Guys. We are Wing T team that just so happens to be in the shotgun. That's it. But, could you imagine if I had said....'we are going to run the Wing T' at Auburn? At the first sign of struggle, my head would have been on a stick. Hurry up-spread- No huddle just sounds cooler. That's all."

Some of the best HS programs across the country are old school Wing T teams. Bellevue, Washington...Lowndes County, GA (the stadium you see on I-75 south out of Valdosta), Cambden County, GA, Tucker HS outside of Atlanta.

You heard it here first, but I'm just telling you....these old school offenses (Wing T, Split Back Veer, Wishbone, Single Wing, etc) are/will make a comeback. Football is like fashion. What's new is old and what's old is new again.

I agree with you. Especially with the Chip Kelly and Malzahn style of temp. A team who masters a 4-play playbook and is at the line before you can get set and has interchangeable parts when they sub.

Direct quotes from both coaches to me while talking to them. Gus do you and Chip Kelly run the same offense? It looks similar. Gus comment " yes , I took a lot of his power stuff when I was at Tulsa. We clinic with each other."

Coach Kelly aside from playing a high tempo, what's the secret of your zone run game. Chips comment after complaining about having to pay for a $6 a beer at the National Convention in Nashville. He chuckled, " I run zone very minimal during a game, watch all the wing t video you can or listen to Gus."

A week later he was with the Eagles

Watch the film. Gus has always been more of a gap scheme guy. The film doesn't match up to them running the same offense. They don't combo much but it's zone based not gap scheme. Gus runs a ton of power read type stuff and Kelly doesn't. Watch the Philly film and you see more Mazzone stuff. I've never talked to Gus or Kelly. I have been to Kelly's clinic before at Oregon and Mazzone. Mazzone was offered the OC job when Kelly became the HC. It is not the same offense. They do some similar stuff but it's not the same.

Much of the new stuff we see is just repackaged stuff. Every once in a while some stuff comes up. The use of the fast motion and packaged plays for example. It's still option football just done a little different. Honestly a lot of the new stuff starts in HS but no one sees it

HD....Together we may rule the world !! :ylsuper:

Now, Just How Scary of a Thought is That ? :scared:

Uh Gus uses 2 backs all the time....They may not be in a split backfield look, but their are 2 backs a lot.

Let's don't make it hard. Remember Chip told me he was a Gap guy first and Full Zone second. I asked how his blocking scheme. He said study wing t.

Gus Malzahan at Shiloh Christian and Springdale ran the wing t. He started running it out of the gun with his now OC, Rhett Lashlee. So, Yes, Chip Kelly and Gus Malzahan run about a 90% similar offense. The only difference is motion style and where they put the 2nd back.

The spread teams in Ga are taking over!!

I love watching a Wing-T team. If your defense isn't prepared for it, good luck keeping the backs from ripping off long runs time and time again.

NewCath called theirs a "Run and Shoot" but it had a ton of Wing-T prinicpals in it during their title runs of '10 and '12. If you want to see some ball handling mastery, watch Hitchew once he got used to the offense about midseason in '10.

A lot like the option b/c you have to play your keys every time. A little more difficult due to all the double teams to next level blocking at the point of attack.
