As for defense being a worthless "program," that is sheer fantasy. Our federal government has a constitutional obligation to provide Americans with secure borders. No such right for illegal aliens to receive jobs and/or welfare benefits exists.

 

I was talking more along the lines that our defense budget is bigger than the next 10 or so countries combined. I have no problem going out on a limb and saying some of those programs in the defense budget are in fact worthless. You don't see an incentive to legalize these immigrants and/or tax them or anything? Especially since you and I can agree that they are not leaving.

Our defense budget is being slashed by the current administration, at a time when our biggest enemies are increasing their budgets. The Obama administration is about to force 500 majors out of the military, including some who are deployed to Afghanistan.

 

As for illegal aliens, they are breaking our laws simply by being here, but they are also filling up our prisons and consuming our resources without paying for them. Because, for the most part, illegals hold the lower paid jobs in our economy, most of them not only pay no net federal income taxes, but they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

 

I agree that it is unlikely that justice will be served to the illegal aliens who are here because of our corrupt politicians, but I see absolutely no reason to cheapen American citizenship by rewarding amnesty and a path to citizenship to people who have shown nothing but contempt for American laws and culture.

 

I have good friends who have been working to obtain green cards for more than seven years. Why should an illegal alien drawing welfare benefits jump to the front of the line for legal status or citizenship? In fact, why should any nation not set high standards for people it allows to become citizens?

There are nearly 7 billion people in this world who are not U.S. citizens. So, should any of them who manages to break our laws and sneak across our southern border be made to become citizens?

 

American citizenship is not a punishment. It is a reward. Your suggestion makes no sense, because most illegal aliens consume more government services than they pay for. The more illegals that we MAKE become citizens, the quicker the house of cards will fall.

The only people who are leaving this country in relatively large numbers are wealthy people who are trying to protect the wealth that they have earned before it is stripped from them by the class warriors in DC.

Nevertheless Mitch, not everyone in the planet wants to come to the US. I can understand certain parts of central and south america. I can certainly understand parts of Africa. The rest however could care less about moving to america and vice versa. Thats why i suggest making people legal here and making them pay taxes. If wealthy people want to leave, let them. I know a bunch of hard working people who work here and contribute.

No, but millions of poor, illiterate, and unemployed people would love to come here and that is exactly why this country should be in full control of immigration into our nation. Nobody who is not already an American citizen has a right to become an American citizen.

Actually, millions are not coming here. The net migration from Mexico has been close to zero. If these people want to contribute and a lot of them do, I say lets get the most out of them.

No system that will not ensure a secure border will be acceptable to me.

 

Once the border has been secured so that this country can selectively allow legal immigrants to enter the country, then we should consider providing a path to citizenship for people who were brought here as children.

 

Those who entered the country as adults need to leave and apply for legal re-entry. Then, they can apply through the same legal immigration process that my friends from India and Bangladesh used to enter this country.
