You have everything right except the year. It was 90. Not positive on who Fairdale beat in the 91 finals, it was whoever beat Holy Cross in the semi's (maybe Tates Creek?)

 

90 Holmes team was one of NKY's best ever. Very good and incredibly deep. Dogs' seemed poised to go on a heck of a run in the Ninth Region with so many young kids part of the rotation. They didn't win another regional title the rest of the decade though.

 

Hughes had a rough night in the finals, largely thanks to being guarded by a longer and more athletic player. Fatigue may have played a small role as well. If he shoots four less shots Holmes may win this game, and Fairdale was great. That's how good this Holmes team was. Hughes went on to Farleigh Dickerson.

 

Fairdale goes down in history as one of the state's best teams ever (deservedly so)

 

The 90 Holmes is largely forgotten. In a best of seven series, I'd take them over any team that has won the Ninth since though. A few of those series' would be quite interesting though.

 

You are right on the 90' Holmes team as being one of the greatest in 9th region history, but the 91' team got screwed in the regional final against Holy Cross. The refs that called that game should be absolutely embarrassed by calling such a horrible game especially the call on Chris Hayes of Holmes when they called a charge and it was so blatantly a block on HC. Still to this day those refs PMO.

Does anyone have any tape of the 1993 Breckenridge County team? I've heard they played five as one better than anyone in our generation and would love to see them operate, but was too young to remember even if I were there.

Maybe the biggest omission in this thread is 6’8 Darren Allaway from UHA. He led the Blazers to the state championship in 1992 and was named the MVP of the Sweet 16. Teams had no answer for him in the Sweet 16 that year. (Btw all of the UHA Sweet 16 games are on YouTube if anyone wants to check them out.) Anyway Allaway was a KY All Star that summer then went on to play for Stanford University in the PAC 10. Also on that UHA team was 6’2 senior guard Marty Cline. He would go on to be on the all newcomer team in the OVC for Morehead State as a freshman. Sergio Luyk was also a really good player for UHA back in those times. I believe he was in the 1990 class. Luyk was a 6’8 forward who went on to play for St. John’s in the Big East. As others have mentioned there was also Greg Buckner(Clemson/NBA), Isiah Victor(Tennessee), Lamont Barnes(Temple), & Harold Swanagan(Notre Dame) that passed through UHA in the 90’s.

While it’s on my mind Hopkinsville/Christian County also had players like Chris Whitney(Clemson/NBA), Tony Lovan(WKU), CJ Pepper(Arkansas State), Corey Thompson, & Tobiah Hopper(Louisville) come through during the 90’s.
