Alcohol Sale and Consumption at Youth Sports Event

Featured Replies

I have apparently been going to the wrong youth sporting events. :D

Come on man, you know alcohol at youth wrestling tournaments would just make them so much more entertaining.

How much of that comes from the fact that you live smack in the middle of the Baptist Belt, where mommas and grammas tell their kids from day one that they can't control themselves while on the demon brew? You tell somebody often enough that they're powerless to control themselves while drinking and, guess what? Self-fulfilling prophesy.

I don't know that has anything to do with it. We didn't even have alcohol sales here until a year or so ago. I'm talking about events in Indy, Cincy, Louisville, Lexington, Dallas, Nashville, Chicago. All of those areas are more "Progressive" than the backwards people you think most Kentuckians to be. I for one can't remember going to a family reunion where there wasn't drinking from beginning to end...don't recall any talk of Demon Brew then.

Maybe you guys are just used to the people around you being loud and obnoxious and spilling beer on you constantly. Maybe your used to people cursing during an entire concert because they are too drunk to pay attention...that could be why some of you never see any problems with people drinking at events...Your used to it!

Or because people that are around it more, and aren't brought up to fear alcohol actually know how to drink responsibly? :idunno:

So your saying when I go to a Reds game and the guy behind me is so drunk he spills two beers on me it's because he's never around drinking and fears it. Or sitting at a concert at an out door amphitheater in Indy the guy that was walking up and down every aisle knocking people over because he was drunk and had lost his keys, it's because he's not around drinking because there isn't any drinking in Indy either.

I don't fear it and have probably drank more than most on here, I don't any more because I think it is a bad example for my children...but that is my choice.

You must be the most unlucky person ever. I go to nearly a dozen Reds games a year, a dozen concerts, etc. and have never had any of what you say happen. Does it exist? I'm sure it does, but stop making it out to be the norm, and call it what it is, a very rare occurrence.

I'm with you.

I've been to hundreds of concerts and hundreds of professional sporting events.

Do bad things happen? Of course they do. But it is the exception not the rule.

I could count on one hand the number of incidents I have witnessed.

Like going to watch a game at Paul Brown? That type of responsibly?

I can't tell you how many times I've longed for a beer during that super long first round of consi's.

I had season tickets for 4 or 5 years. I remember once seeing an incident due to drunkenness. Now I've seen a ton of Bengal fans heckling and making opposing fans miserable, but that has nothing to do with drunkenness and it was about 50/50 whether they were drinking or not. Cincy fans are just idiot jerks, alcohol or no alcohol. :lol2:

I've been to hundreds and hundreds of concerts, and more than my fair share of ballgames. I can recall only a handful of times where I've had somebody spill a beer on me. Just doesn't happen very often.

I tune out obnoxious behavior by others, so it doesn't really bother me much.

My guess is that you are hyper-tuned to notice it because of where you're from, and you automatically assume a person drinking can't control themselves.

I was kidding. I was thinking more of myself and how I'm not allowed to go to Bengals games any more according to my wife.

Sorry, but I'm calling bull here Jim. So, someone who ends up losing control when they drink can be because it was a self fulfilling prophesy because their grandma told them that's what would happen, so they then live "down" to that? Come on dude, you can't really believe that.

Now here is the irony of the other part of your post. Many people...I can't point to a number but it's more than a few...CAN'T control themselves when on...as you put it, the "demons brew". That's not opinion, that's fact. Some people can't just have one...maybe 2. They have to have 6 or 8. True they may make it look bad on everyone else, and again I'm not saying it's the majority, but lets not act like everything is all hunky dory in every situation where alcohol is involved, because many times it's not.

I beer, a keg, the whole truck full, lol. Right there with you.

Yes, yes I do. When I was an underage drinker, the ones who always were the most out-of-control were the kids from the hardcore Protestant families. When I went on to college at WKU, invariably the first people to pass out at the party were kids from dry counties, which are almost exclusively Baptist.

I am a firm believer that this phenomenon has to do with gramma and momma implanting stupid ideas in their kids' head that one drink will make you lose control. Even though momma and gramma probably never drank themselves and have no way of personally knowing alcohol's affect on their body.

I say people should know their own limitations and act responsibly rather than giving in to the mysticism about alcohol implanted into their brains by their Bible-tossing moms and grannys.

This I agree with. Even at Hanover, the hardest partiers tended to be the one's who picked up partying later in life than I did.
