Is Chris Johnson right about Johnny Manziel?

I don't see why they can't have their own life and interests away from football — there's no rule that says everybody in the league has to love it so much that they eat, breathe and sleep football. As long as they're doing their job, what do you care?

Completely agree!

Did I post they couldn't have their own life and interests? No. I just have my idea how a professional athlete should carry himself in the public. They are selling a brand (NFL) when in public like it or not. And I would think they have taken football (in this case) a heck of a lot more serious than others or they wouldn't be paid professionals of the sport. My post really is not so much about Manziel as it is a general statement. Like I put in another post, Manziel is still growing up, I expect him to do a few bonehead things because he's a rookie. But I expect him to learn from his mistakes to be a leader on and off the field. That's my opinion and if you disagree, it's all good.

Uumm, thought football was the life of a professional football player. If he wants to be a leader, that's not something you can turn on during a season and turn off in the off-season. JMO.

Is your job your life? Does it define everything about you?

IMO, if you're a professional sports player, yes. His job is not done in an office but in public so the public has a preconceived idea about who he is by how he "performs and acts" in public whether on the field/court or in a bar. (I hope I'm making my point clear. Maybe I used the word public too many times. :lol2:). And it could be that I may expect too much from professional athletes of today.

You basically said that if you're a professional sports athlete, that your job is your life. I liken "your job is your life" as "you have no interests other than your job."

I don't see what difference it makes "how they carry themselves in public" — which seems to be your way of backtracking a bit — as long as they're doing their job. Why do you have this idea in your head that pro athletes should be some boy scout anachronism who runs through the wall just because coach says so?

^^ Wow, I did not mean to urinate you off Schue, I was just giving MY opinion. I don't feel I "backtracked" at all in my posts. I feel if you are a paid professional athlete of the NFL, you should conduct yourself a certain way IN PUBLIC because you represent a brand. I didn't post anything about a coach or running through walls for a coach.

I don't really care what Manziel does in the off-season. Live it up. But if he's a flop, he will have put the target on his back himself...

Here is the thing in what way is he living his life that you disagree with? He is not out getting in trouble. Yeah he is out going to parties and stuff like that but whats wrong with that? Now if he gets into drugs or drinking and driving then that is a problem. However what he is doing is not bad and by all accounts its not causing him to slackk on his job. As of now he is showing how you can work hard and be successful to get to where he is and also still enjoy life.
