Political Earthquake: House Majority Leader Eric Cantor loses Primary

Featured Replies

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- House Majority Leader Eric Cantor was defeated Tuesday by a little-known economics professor in Virginia's Republican primary, a stunning upset and major victory for the tea party.

Cantor is the second-most powerful member of the U.S. House and was seen by some as a possible successor to the House speaker.

His loss to Dave Brat, a political novice with little money marks a huge victory for the tea party movement, which supported Cantor just a few years ago.

The Tea Party is alive and well.

Cantor's internal polling had him up 34 points.

This is great news. Let's see if Boehner cuts an amnesty deal with Obama now.

Well Ray Allen is an idiot.

Shocking. I thought Cantor had the support of Tea Party members in the House. Wasn't there talk a couple years ago that Tea Party members were going to back Cantor against Boehner for Speaker?

Now the next question, is Cantor's district a Republican dominated district, or is it just Republican leaning? Is this going to be another loss in the general election by a Tea Party candidate to a Democrat challenger?

Footnote: Apparently one of the big issues that worked against Cantor was his work on immigration reform. If true, this is a step in the wrong direction for Republicans.

Footnote 2: Both candidates in the fall are professors at Randolph Macon.

Virginia is an open primary state.

Anyone can vote for any slate of either party. It will be interesting to see if Cantor was taken out by the Dems.

I don't like that rule - open primary rule. What is the makeup of this district?

The lowest percent of the vote Cantor ever received before this race was 58%.

Good riddance.

Conservatives despise Eric Cantor. He is one of the biggest advocates amnesty for illegals in Congress. His support of so-called immigration reform cost him this election, despite him claiming to oppose amnesty on the campaign trail in the days leading up to today's election.

Good riddance. I hope that this ends the political career of Eric Cantor.

FYI, the consultants who got Eric Cantor where he's at are Boyd Marcus and Ray Allen.

To give you a perspective of who Eric has -- *ahem* had -- in his corner, Boyd Marcus, a longtime GOP consultant in VA, not only endorsed Terry Mcauliffe, but even works in his administration.

Ray Allen, Eric Cantor and their "Young Guns" crew have aggressively been working to oust liberty-minded incumbents/candidates on the state central and party committees throughout Virginia. They got pushed back and their attempts, for the most part, were abysmal failures.

It's not just District 7 here in VA that pushed back against Cantor. It's the entire state.

Cantor's internal polling had him up 34 points.

Doubtful that's what was actually showing. Either you have a bad pollster, which is highly unlikely in Cantor's case, or they lied to bolster their image.

Mitch ... I would expect you to know the answer ... wasn't it Cantor that Tea Party House members were said to be rallying behind to take Boehner's place as Speaker?

No. What "Tea Party" member(s) have ever said or hinted at the notion?

Eric Cantor is despised at the same level, if not more than John Boehner.

You must have missed out on quite a bit over the past year or so..

I don't recall that being the case, but they may at one time have offered to support him if Boehner would step down. However, Cantor's actions over the past few years left him almost as hated among conservatives as Boehner, McCain, and Graham are. He is Boehner's right hand man - but not for much longer.
