13th Region Coach of the Year

Featured Replies

Ok I've seen a lot of threads on here asking who should be the coach of the year from other regions. So I'm going to ask about the 13th. Dinky has a great season at Barbourville this year. Coach Strange had a terrific season at Pineville, even though he had a tough ending to it. Steve Wright at South should be considered because his team has beat the 13th region quite easy this year. Personally I think Glenn Gray at Clay County should get it. I might be a little biased, but he has took a team that was supposed to have a rough season to 23-5, and a chance to win the 49th district. So what do you guys think??

Clay wins the district! I say Gray.

Has done a decent job with a very nice schedule and the tournaments at Clay. He said he signs the checks.

Gray's done a good job, but no one said Clay was going to have a "rough" season. They were ranked in the top five or six in the region by every publication I saw.

I'm not talking about publications and things like that. I'm talking about people saying stuff. Almost every post I read on here said that Gray was no more than a grade school coach. Anywhere you went in town you heard that he couldn't get it done. Well, to all these people look at him now. He has took this team to 24-5 and 49th district champs. Good job Coach!

District titles don't weigh much anymore, especially at Clay. Although Gray and his staff have exceeded expectations of pretty much everybody, it would only be fair to see how the region turns out before labeling any coach "Coach of The Year". Start this thread again next weekend.

Either Coach Strange from Pineville, Steve Wright of SL, or Coach Whitaker of Bell Co.

Coach Strange has done what no one has been able to do in a long long time, and that is get P'ville to a 20 win season. Irregardless of the easy schedule, he still did a heck of a job.

Sure, Coach Wright has all the talent in the world, and a bum off the street could probably coach SL, and with the talent they have they would still win ball games. But SL is undefeated in the region, and will probably remain so. Not to mention SL has had a bull's eye on their chest all year, and yet Wright has managed to keep the team on track despite some rough waters at times. If SL wins the region then I dont see how Wright doesnt get it. He is undoubtedly the best coach in the region.

I think Bell Co's Whitaker deserves mentioning too. He has had to coach through several key injuries, a mass exodus of several big players due to football, and a load of inexperienced youth. Yet Bell Co. has went from regional nobody to regional hopeful. They are a top 3 team at this point, and if Bell Co. doesnt fizzle in the tourney, then Whitaker may deserve the award.

I think the voting for the coach and player of the year awards is completed before tournament play begins.

I still think Strange will win. Whitaker, Nolan, Gray, Wright, Phipps and Pietrowski have all done a good job, and Cumberland (Jerry Edwards) may be the most improved team in the region.

Does anyone know the KABC regional winners of the Coach and player of the year? Region by region? Players get an automatic try-out with KY/Indiana All-Star game.

What about ol' Dinky? He's had his teams in the thick of things for several years now. Last year's region champs, Corbin, were darn lucky to get past Barbourville in the district. If South Laurel wasn't in the 13th this year, they would have as good a chance as anyone in making it to the Big Show.

I agree with Strange, but Cumberland wouldn't have won more than 4or5 games without kids coming in from other places. Scott would have probably done just as well or better.

My vote goes to Strange...then pietrowski
