This is the one he's talking about, RM.

Oh. Well, I didn't intend it to be an absolute, which is why I added "in general". As I pointed out later, there is evidence even on BGP where women are discussed as if their worth is defined by their looks or other physical attributes. And I pointed out examples. I've never said "all men". I don't think the statement I made was sexist, but an observation. I can come up with other information to support what I mean here, but I don't really know if that will help the discussion.

No doubt but you can't argue that the "privilege" doesn't pave the road.
No, I am not denying that some people face obstacles greater than others. However, when you look around this country and study history, you find that in free societies, where obstacles are societal rather than legal, many, if not most, of the most successful people are those who rose from modest beginnings and overcame obstacles.

Those who are convinced that they cannot succeed because the "system" or other people do not want them to succeed don't succeed. IMO, that is why so many black people who are born in this country do not succeed. Meanwhile, immigrants, some of whom arrive on our shores unable to speak English, and others who arrive from Africa with the same black skin as their American kinfolk, become wildly successful.

When society decides what individuals are entitled to, many of those individuals simply accept whatever crumbs are thrown their way. That is where we are as a nation. The government tries to "give" people benefits to which they are not entitled in exchange for robbing them of their individual liberty.

As government grows stronger, then it simply takes more from even more people because they become too weak to resist. That has always been the nature of government and it will always be government's nature.

Americans enjoyed a couple hundred years of relative freedom but that era is quickly drawing to a close.

I think another aspect to be considered is what defines "success". On a broad scale I believe that success for American minorities would be a presence in politics and board rooms that reflected the statistical representation of the group. Individually, one can achieve such a level of success that does nothing in the overall scheme of things to impact the disparity of the group as a whole.

I do feel that white privilege is a waning phenomenon, as new generations come into the workforce and politics. It simply will be "evolved out".

So you are saying the white privilege has never existed and has never been part of the problem in the lack of diversity and opportunity for minorities in America. Never????????

First I don't like the term white privlige , the definition and conferences created for it. I find it comical that these supposed race pioneers are being as racist as anyone they are claiming to be fighting. Any time we seperate a segment of the population by the color of their skin we are trying to isolate them and make them feel bad for something they had no control over. At universities they are making white students apologize for the reason of being born white. The entire thought process begins with and ends with the fact being white is a negative.

Now if you want me to admit racial profiling exists and negative stereotypes for all races then obviously yes it does. If you want me to admit decades ago there were white people that didn't trust minorities again obviously.

But I have been following this "white privilege " movement in our higher education it is down right scary .

I'm sorry if I get offended by the concept of a majority of my success was predetermined by my race and not hard work. I guess it was my race that worked 2 jobs to pay for college and be the first person in my family with a four year degree. I should thank my race for excelling in a merit base work environment and rising the ranks. I should thank my race for my post secondary education and not my hard work . So I repeat and stand by white privlige does not exist in the form being taught on our campuses across this country and I will debate any so called intellect teaching our youths today.

As I've stated in prior topics on race on this site. In 1960 race was a major factor for short comings but in 2014 it is a minor issue and the much bigger issue is socioeconomic. But there is a segment of the population that makes to much money dividing us by the color of your skin and can't let it die.

I grew up in a lower middle class family . To get where I am I had a lot more struggles and had to work harder than people born into a better socioeconomic environment than I did. Was it fair I had to work two jobs to pay for school and my buddy who was from wealthy family didn't have to work at all ? Life isn't fair and once everyone realizes that we will all be better off. Successful people don't use words like fair or try to place blame on others for short comings. Successful people see their hurdles and leap them .

I guess my hard core problem with the concept is casting blame instead of conquering problems and that is the growing mentality of this country instead of owning situations they push blame.

Would people feel better if the term was advantage instead of privilege?

Would people feel better if the term was advantage instead of privilege?

By "people", who do you mean?

Would people feel better if the term was advantage instead of privilege?

No because in 2014 whether applying for job or education in almost all cases White is not an advantage. I'll we sign on that with cops being white probably still holds an advantage . But if you don't think in both education and business leaders are dying to hire qualified minorities Id say that is a naive thought process dictated by what may of happened 30 years ago. I think it is unhealthy for our country to have a thought process such as white privlige being taught because it does nothing for the greater good and continues to divide people by skin color.

By "people", who do you mean?

Those who argue there is no white privilege.

The other problem I have with the white privlige idea is people feel they are enlightened by supporting the concept. It is sad because in reality it is backward thought process without any real intellectual thought process on the true socioeconomic problems that may exist.

Hypothetical example to help illustrate my point:

John Whitebred Executive IV graduates from college, and before he even has his diploma in hand, his father, John Whitebred Executive III and John II have already made the necessary phone calls to their buddies at other companies to set John IV with a cushy job he in no way, shape or form deserves based strictly on his academic credentials and skills.

Boardrooms across corporate America are chock full of people like John IV and his father and grandfather, who used their "leg up" in the crony circles to make sure their exalted family retains power and wealth, at the expense of others more qualified who didn't have the benefit of such connections.

Ultra-wealthy, prestigious families such as my example are doing everything in their power to make sure they and others like them from uber-wealthy, prestigious families maintain that position of power, to the detriment of those who would love to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps."

There is no denying that family connections can get a person a good starting job but top managers do not become top managers if they are poor performers. Who paved the way to success for Bill Gates, Michael Dell, Warren Buffett, and Jeff Bezos? Nobody succeeds at the cost of somebody else's failure.

Hats off to those guys. I wonder if their offspring will be as talented as them and actually earn the positions that will be gifted to them. But they won't have to prove any of their real worth to get those jobs starting out.

If they don't pan out then somebody else will be running those family businesses. Giving your children a leg up is one of the rewards of working hard to succeed in life but you cannot make your children successful.

The problem is they are already viewed as successful within the crony circle because of their birthright. People like this will continue to be propped up by their family's massive wealth and personal connections and never face the true consequences for their failures. George W. Bush's failures in the business world come readily to mind in this case. No matter how he screwed up, somebody was always there to throw more money at him. Kinda like welfare of the wealthy.
