Sterling is one messed up guy! Not sure of the order, but he starts to smear the girlfriend, and other people start talking trash about her, even a Tommy Lasorda who up until his comments I used to respect and a huge fan! NOT anymore, he is a jerk and his true colors came out, he did not have to start attacking her, don't shoot down the messenger!

 

I don't care if in California it is illegal to tape without the consent of all present. To me that isn't an issue! The NBA is a brand and they have to protect the brand. As a few posters stated, the NBA is like a private club, you can't say or do whatever you want, and if the club things what you said or did is going to hurt the club, even more so to force you out.

 

Here we have people saying that Catholic schools have the right to fire a teacher because of the teachers beliefs or what they said or did in their lives outside of the school. A short time ago didn't a teacher around Cincinnati get fired because the teacher supported a gay son? If you believe that a Catholic school, or any other faith based school can fire a teacher for their beliefs or who they are outside of school, because they say that goes against what they stand for, then why can't the NBA say they want this guy out as they don't agree with what he said?

 

I can guarantee that almost everyone on this site would agree that if a teacher made a racial rant and it was recorded, either legally or illegally, that the school has the right to fire the teacher, as he would be a distraction, and how the non-white students would feel around the teacher.

 

Does the NBA have to schedule games for each team? Can they tell him he can keep the team, then hurry up and create a new team, and instead of scheduling games for the Clippers, they schedule games for this new team? He can still have his team, but the NBA won't allow him to play other NBA teams?

That's another thing people are confusing....The NBA is not a court of law. How the recorded conversation was obtained or made public is completely irrelevant. It's a private organization (club), that has set bylaws that every member agrees to before they join.

This seems to be a common theme coming up by many. On the surface it makes sense, but the bylaws were established by lawyers with what I assume to be varying layers of language which allows them to take matters such as this to court. All of these guys are billionaires. They will do everything possible (on the front end) to protect their investment.

I've thought from the first that this guy is going to make it very messy. He's a lousy human being who has no common decency. He doesn't care what people think of him or who he hurts. My guess is that he will spend tens of millions of dollars trying to dig up any dirt he can on the other owners that he can then bring into court to use, thus making it even messier for the NBA.

Mark Cuban has been the only owner that has publicly alluded to such. I think people would be horrified at a lot of the stories which may exist from every owner as to how they've secured their wealth or used their wealth to abuse other people.

Any chance he ends up dead somewhere? Its bad enough messing with one person with money, but messing with a bunch of them and if any of them have a messy past, they may not want it exposed.

Forget the other owners, he might want to worry about his family. If the 2.5B sale price is a real number they're looking at additional taxes of $600M over what they would pay if he died and they inherited then sold.

So, It's my understanding that Sterling wrote a signed letter to his ex-wife basically giving her permission to sell the team. He's since said he's changed his mind. If there is a signed letter, can't they just tell him "sorry about your luck", and proceed with the sale?

I would think he could rescind it at any time.
