This team is very good However, there is a team in Northern Ky. That is very similar talent wise at their grade level. The team is made up of 5 players from SK, 2 from Grant County, 1 from Holmes, and 1 from St.Ursela (Oh.) I really hope to see them play each other soon.

Both teams are headed to 8th Grade AAU Nationals next week but they won't play in the same Division. The Legacy Elite 2018 Team will be playing in D1 and the team your talking about will be playing in D2.

I would agree the top 4-5 D2 teams may be able to play D1, but they would be avg at best in the D1 division. They are 7th graders as far as AAU goes. They are on our team. Maddie burcham also from Conner. Then two HHS girls, a Ryle girl and a Dixie girl. And two girls from Cincy. They are the shining stars and a year behind these teams they are talking about.

Ton of potential! That team is very good. They just don't have any size, but they do fine. They are very fun to watch.

Rcc9 you have me curious. I've watched a whole lot of basketball and while I respect your opinion. The facts don't hold true. Last year the shining stars teams lost by 4 to the div 1 champs. I also know the div 1 champs year prior from tn lost big to one of the top div 2 teams. Shining stars has beat a lot of highly ranked div 1 teams from my understanding and finished in top four in Deep South against a year older div 1 teams. The defending div 2 national champs from Boston are playing div 1 with the same roster. So will see how they do.

Nothing irks me more than to have teams play down. I'm not a fan of that at all but to say they aren't good enough is not even close. Try again. I agree!! To be the best you must play & beat the best!! I think some argue about "fairness" & feel confidence level will drop if God forbid someone loses!! Everyone wants to win the trophy/championship & no one likes to lose but in order for a player & team to develop, they need losses to learn from!! I get why there are different divisions, but I don't think coaches should be allowed to choose what division they play in on National level!! The only reason a team would play down is solely to make it easier to win!!

Agree....you must play and lose to the best to learn how to beat the best. However, I need some clarification. I was under the impression that only the winner of the State title could go D1 and all other had to settle or a D2 or D3 bid. Again please clarify.

I'll tell you why they are playing D2. But I will also give you my opinion. From day one with the shining stars, I said we should play D1. From the first time we had our first parent meeting. However, I'm only one parent. I agree 100% with play at the highest level. I coaches and always played d1. We weren't high d1 talented, but we played it. I coached the same team for 6 years and we may have only won 2 tournament in that time. Did I suck as a coach? Did my players suck? I don't think so. We just never had the notion to only play tournaments we could win. I would actually call around to find out where the beat teams were playing and try to get in that tourney. So you're preaching to the choir!

 

They play D2 because they feel like they are very undersized. For example, my daughter is the starting 4 and her best friend is the starting 5 for the shining stars. They go to school with the starting PG for the D1 national champs. That PG is the shortest starter on her team and she is taller than both my daughter and her friend that plays the 5. And by the way, better. So there comes a time when size is just too much to overcome. I can tell you in d2 in our division, we didn't play any team that didn't have at least one 6 footer and most had two. My daughter is 5'4" and her friend the 5 is 5'5". They do fine, but when the bigs are big, skilled and just as strong, the size is very hard to overcome. That's the reason they play D2. I'm not saying it's want I would want, but that's why. This team is good around here, but challenged when playing the elite.

 

As for other teams playing with or beating other top teams, yes that can happen on occasion. But are you telling me that you've seen them run through 5-6 of them in row in the national when you know for sure every team has all their players and aren't working on something. Just because a team "plays with" another team during a regular tournament doesn't mean that when the marbles are on the line they can play with them. I played many tournaments down players or picked up players to play just for that weekend. I also played tournament solely for the intentions of putting in a new offense or working on a particular defense and not changing which made games closer or we even lost one here or there trying to perfect something that made us better down the road. So unless you have multiple examples of a team running through d1 teams in a tournament that really means something, I'll stick to my opinion. Also, if a team runs through d1 teams with the same roster, then my guess is that they probably shouldn't have played d2 the year before.

 

There are always exceptions to every rule. But as a rule of thumb and from what I've seen, I'll stand by what I feel is right.

 

 

And if either of you have read ANYTHING I post, I can stand trophy hunters either.

Nicely stated!! I hope you do not feel I was calling you or a specific team "trophy hunters". I was just making a general statement & my opinion as to why a good team would choose to play a lower division. I'm not 100% sure how D1 vs D2 works, but in other sports if a D2 team ranks & finishes Top 2 in their region they are given an option to move up a division. If they do, then that is where they stay for that season. Clubs have the option to move down the following season if they choose to, but not during the season. Seems that rule would make sense for basketball as well!!
