I agree with most of this. I don't think they found a "bargain". They thought the staff would carry them, and they were right. Who knew the pen would suck and that your guys would dot the DL?
May 20, 201412 yr Marshall too. Agreed both not great, but I wasn't totally against either at the time especially if the plan was moving Chapman to starter.

They added Shumacher. He and Heisey is a pretty decent start to a bench. I have always believed they could find a bat at the deadline. Now with the injury issues and bullpen suckedness they may not be buyers. It has been fairly unlucky but also when you spend all your money on a few parts and have no depth you leave yourself open to this.

Schumaker, Heisey, and Pena are a solid trio off the bench. Not many teams can withstand the injuries the Reds have had to 3 of their everyday players and still have a bench that looks major league caliber. Soto and Barnhart, and even Bernadina are 3 guys that wouldn't be on the major league roster if everyone was healthy.
May 20, 201412 yr Who's complaining about the bench? I thought Skip was a great pickup. I think PH Heisey is outstanding. But to get think they were waiting on the trade deadline to get a bat is silly, IMO. They needed a bat to even get to the deadline in contention. But again, the injuries have been the issue. I don't care what else happens, I'd like to help Soto pack.
May 20, 201412 yr Nelson Cruz could have made this team a World Series contender (assuming he stays healthy). That bat, in the middle of that lineup, could've wreaked havoc. He got a 1 year, $8 million deal from the Orioles. Cruz is hitting .273 with 12 HR & 37 RBI.

Not the most practical, but I'm just throwing out names that piqued my interest this offseason. Drew turned down a very good chunk of change because it wasn't a multi-year deal.
