I thought it was observed in parts of Mexico in celebration of some sort of victory over the French during our civil war? The History Channel had something about it and wondered if the French had not been stopped there, would they have come north to aid the south and perhaps change the course of the war. Interesting questions.

Technically Mexico gained its independence in September, the 16th I believe.

 

May 5th was the day the Mexicans in Puebla stopped the French Army from continuing North and possibly invading the US. While a moment of pride for Mexicans, not the day of independence.

That is also a reasonable question. I think the fear of the schools is not so much that the Latinos will feel threatened by the American Flag but that the intent of the people wearing those flag shirts is to question the Latino's patriotism and in fact emphasizing that they are viewed as not being americans.

So would it be wrong to wear a patriotic shirt to a Columbus Day Parade in NYC...would those of Italian Heritage have a right to be upset?

The battle of Puebla. The French invaded, the French lost the battle, but won the war. So I understand why it is not exactly a celebrated holiday.

Our ancestors all came from somewhere else.

 

Just because my great-great-grandparents were born in the US and you are a second generation American from Mexico doesn't make me 'more American' than you.

 

I've known several men and women who've come here from Mexico and other countries to our south and they're no different than us....working hard to take care of their families and trying to be decent citizens.

Regardless of the intent of the morons wearing it I just see no excuse for anyone who is a citizen and proud of their country to feel threatened by its very flag.

About 114 years ago yes, they would have felt threatened by nativist groups. Given the fact that the nativist mentality is part of the problem in this situations as well. I think we have glossed over quite a bit of the things that we have done to immigrants and their descendants who were a bit too different.

 

I don't think it is nearly to the same level as it was back then, but the similarities are fascinating.

114 years ago there wasn't a Cinco De Mayo celebration in the US either. We are talking about today and people that live TODAY! Every single group of people that have came to this country have faced some sort of oppression and of course some way more than others.

 

Hispanics have been in this country as long or longer than any other ethnic group so if the others have evolved to where German Americans or Italian Americans aren't offended by American Patriotism then neither should Hispanic Americans.
