I think scheduling Russell is a step back for Raceland. Raceland already plays Ashland, whom Russell loses to 9 out of 10 times. Raceland is currently playing Ironton, whom I'm not even sure if Russell has ever beaten. Raceland is already playing Coal Grove, whom I'm sure could have beaten Russell quite a few times in the last 5-10 years. Raceland already plays two or three other schools that are larger then Russell. Playing Russell does nothing to make Raceland better, Raceland has beaten them five games in a row, they took their ball and went home, no need to go backwards in regards to the schedule as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, I am sure that Russell wants to play again and I would too if I were them but Raceland is not, Russell is of no concern, nothing in it for Raceland (sound familiar Devil fans?:sssh:). I never have failed to say what I believe and am too freakin' old to start now. I am also sure that its not my call, my opinion to the Raceland Admin. and $1 will get me a coffee at McDonalds.

So...the only thing that I can say is this - "Raceland AD, Admin., Coach Salmons.....I ask you to reconsider the renewal of the Russell series. We have nothing to gain from it and I personally am not willing to help their program out after all, they were the ones that Quit. As for Raceland..... A program can't go forward by looking in the rear view mirror.

I really have no dog in this fight but would give my 2 cents anyway. I understand how Raceland family feels but two wrongs don't make a right and if I am not mistaking the new Russell coach is Racelands former coach. It seems as though the two coaches know what they can do with these two programs and it would benefit each other to play due to scheduling issues and preparing each other down the road for playoffs. Also keep in mine Raceland and Russell are not that far away from each other and the kids probably love the bragging rights. From what I heard it was the fact the numerous transfers from Russell to Raceland that was behind McGlone wanting to stop the series. Most Russell fans I know thought McGlone shouldn't have stopped the series as Russell was bound to break through and win some of the games sooner or later.

I can't remember all the transfers names but I do know the Messer kid was one of them.

Everyone remembers him and he transferred in 7th grade. In reality, there were not many and all but one of them transferred in junior high school and hardly anyone at Russell knows who they are.

 

When I heard the series was being dropped because of "all the transfers" I laughed because there were not many at all. When people use that excuse, they are really saying "because Conner transferred".

I'm not close to the program Just a Russell grad like most who post on forums but that's why I had heard it was stopped but transfers or not I thought they should have kept playing. I hope what sidelinedoc posted is true and they keep the series going.

I understand. I'm sure with Maynard and Salmons being the coaches at their respective schools the series will be renewed. It's too much of a money maker for either to not want to play. Short travel distance, hopefully a big crowd, and a good gate for both schools. I'm sure the series will be renewed.

Raceland doesn't want it to be a home and home series. Raceland gets a nice check each year, instead of getting the gate every other year. As for the respect, ask Ashland if they respect Raceland. Raceland and Ashland are on solid ground.

When the Ashland Head Coach goes to a camp, and the camp director asks each coach to tell what they want to get from this camp and the Ashland coach says, "I want to beat a little school named Raceland", that is respect.

Ram, as you said, there are transfers that came to Raceland from Russell. C. Messer was one and as you said that was in the 7th grade. Messer coming to Raceland as I understand it was no ones fault at all. Should there be any reason then I believe that I am right in saying that what originally pushed the Messer's was the Russell JFL System, the man that ran things or at least thought that he knew what he was doing was more responsible for losing kids that probably would have went o and played through the Russell system, program. I think than some that were ran off by the Russell JFL fball league incompetence didn't play football again anywhere. Their parents were that turned off and their kids got into other activities is what I was told.

There may have been one other kid that was at Raceland that came from Russell, I'm not sure. I do know that there absolutely was no "pilgrimage" to Raceland as some at Russell like to tell everyone. Raceland has had a few kids that lived in the Wurtland / Greenup / Danyleton areas of the GCHS school district. That I believe was more due to Academics rather than sports, the GC school system was a mess to say the least and Raceland-Worthington schools rank very high state wide in academics. Also, with the ever rising cost of gasoline there were those that came to Raceland bc it was far closer than to Lloyd / GCHS. Most of those kids were here to enroll in elementary school as well so I doubt that playing football was a primary concern for an elementary school parent.

 

Bottom Line is that Raceland owes no one any explanations for anything, all of the clutter coming from there is more "making excuses" for their own failures than anything and of course they are not going to blame themselves.

:thumb: Couldn't have said it better. Should anyone question the respect between Raceland and Ashland then they obviously don't know what they are talking about and that's another thing that Raceland owes no explanation to anyone over.....it's really no ones business except Raceland / Ashland.

 

Speaking of playing all games at one location....1st of all, I am not speaking for the R-W school system so I don't want to hear that......

I think that I, if I had a say would "maybe" agree to another series with Russell....ALL at one location - they would play @ Raceland Every Year, with no special " gate %" involved That would make up that one less home game every other year from playing at Ashland . Sound crazy to Russell supporters ? I guess so, if I were a Red Devil I would think that it was crazy....... that should tell anyone how interested I am in renewing the Raceland/Russell series. :no: :woot:

I mentioned in the other post on here about the "numerous transfers"...I think that there has been 2, maybe another. Not sure, I personally don't call that numerous. I had also stated one reason that I know to be absolutely true as one transfer.

I am not looking to continue this any further but will say about the 2 state titles and a runner up certainly is admirable :thumb:. I know that I certainly wish that Raceland had that. Russell has always had a top notch football program as well as academics. Both Russell and Raceland are blessed in those areas. Both have a great fan base, no arguments there. I will say that is jmo that the way that Ivan McGlone was treated in the last few years by some Russell fans, parents along with the Russell Administration is imo a travesty, dark cloud on the school system. A man that wanted a couple of more years to get the program back to the high level that they knew for years under McGlone to be basically fired....that shows up very bad on the Russell Admin., their appreciation and loyalty. Had McGlone had his usual great seasons the last couple of years there would have been no controversey. jmo

I don't really believe that losing kids was the reason that McGlone didn't renew but will not argue due to not personally knowing McGlone. I do know that there were a lot of Russell fans / parents that could not stand the Fact that they were getting their hat handed back to them by Raceland. Most of the Russell High School superintendents, principals, teachers, school board and others I know always considered Raceland far "below their elite status", they basically taught that. I was told that directly from a Russell teacher that put their kids at Raceland bc of that, had 2 children, neither one played any sport. There have been others that left for basically the same.

 

GRD - I have nothing against you or anyone at Russell at all. I do respect the tradition and history of Russell football. Your Red Devils have a fine coach in T.J. Maynard. I will say that although I may not root for the Devils a lot that I will only root against Russell when/if they play Raceland.
