It's also extremely unhealthy to eat whale (or dolphin) meat due to extremely high mercury content. The Japanese continue to do so as a matter of culture, regardless of the health implications.

 

Additionally, the Japanese have continued to show their disregard to sustainable fishing practices. Virtually every variety of sushi tuna is either threatened or near threatened, yet their tuna consumption and their practices for fishing tuna has gone unchanged.

The thing is the consumption of whales by the Japanese does nothing to sustain human life...No one is going to live on the whale meat. There is no reason to hunt endangered whales simply because it is tradition. None.

First off, "Japs" and then "American Indians". Wow...

 

Second, assuming you're talking about the controversy that arose in Wisconsin in the early 90's involving a court decision about the legality of the Chippewa tribesman spearfishing walleye during spawning seasons...you are incorrect on several points. First of all, they only spear walleye - and the spearing is based on spawning season, so they are virtually guaranteed not to spear any other species of fish based on season and location for their harvesting. Second, it's not "nearly every lake" in the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. It was primarily in lakes around Wisconsin, and the whole to-do was because there were very limited instances of tribesman using their traditional fishing methods in lakes off of their reservations. Third, it was determined by the Wisconsin DNR that the fisherman averaged removal of +/- 3% of the mature fish population, and that percentage was found NOT to be threatening to the fish population. That was why they were permitted to continue.

 

I would also add that we are talking about individuals with traditional primitive fishing spears here. There is nothing "traditional" about the whaling ships that the Japanese are using to harvest the whales in Antarctica. I would challenge how capable the Japanese would be of effectively fishing in the Antarctic Southern Ocean in the first place if they were only using their traditional ships rather than the floating meat processing & packing plants that they have down there now.

Here is a map of the ceded territories where the Great Lakes Chippewa are permitted to spear fish. I would be pretty shocked if this area covers "nearly every lake" in the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin...particularly in the Dakotas...you know, seeing as they have no territories there and all.
