Simon Kenton 2014

First off, I never once said don't schedule a tough team. For instance a tough team for NCC may be Cooper and they schedule Cooper etc. and a tough team for Cooper might be SK and they schedule SK etc. Never said don't schedule tough teams, I said schedule a tough team that can actually help your team prepare for the rest of the season etc. If NCC schedules St X, that will do little to improve them.

There is a huge difference in playing a tough team as in a team that may be a little better than you or playing the Alabama Crimson Tide. For instance, what would benefit Grant Co. more? Playing Beechwood or playing Moeller? Playing Beechwood would benefit them more because they are closer to their playing ability. Playing Moeller would be a huge waste of time because it isn't even in the same area code when it comes to talent level etc.

If CCH playing Moeller or Lasalle or St X would help CCH that would be one thing, but the fact that it hasn't shown those games help in any way except feed the gate with more money. CCH has not benefitted by getting beat by avg of 31 points every year to those teams and has not got them to where those games helped them beat Highlands at all and after all that is CCH's #1 goal year in and year out because without beating Highlands they will never win anything.

I don't understand how it's so hard to understand. If playing harder teams was a garuntee to make you better then I've yet to see any proof of that, and if it were true then every team would be playing teams like that if it worked. The fact that it doesn't work is why teams don't go out of their way to schedule beat downs.

Ok, you had me confused since you threw in Trinity and they very seldom get beatdown. I do think exposure to the best helps but not if you're taking it on the chin by 40 or 50 points each time.

When, exactly, will CovCath begin reaping the benefits of this challenging schedule? Shouldn't it's impact have been demonstrated by now with some wins vs. FTH?

That's a very good question and is the basis for the disagreements. One could certainly argue that CCH has improved since they were beat by 40 to 60 points a few years back and have made the games very interesting several times over the past 3 years. I think that question can only truly be answered by their coaches.

OK- one more attempt at the "proof" angle you are desperate for:

CCH's record since 2009- playing a GCL school each of those years

2009 6-6 (lost to Ryle, Lex Cath, LaSalle, Highlands, St X Ky and Johnson Central)

2010 6-6 (lost to Ryle, LaSalle, NCC, Highlands, St X Ky and Johnson Central)

2011 10-3 (lost to LaSalle and twice to Highlands)

2012 9-4 (lost to LaSalle, Conner and twice to Highlands)

2013 10-3 (lost to Moeller and twice to Highlands)

The last three years in N Ky they lost to Conner once and Highlands six times.

So although I know your pride won't allow you to admit it, it seems very clear to me that improvement happened. Did the improvement happen in spite of, or because of, the tough scheduling? My firm opinion is the latter. The program voluntarily ramped itself up by taking on the big boys- the community of parents who had a choice to make on their son's academic and athletic future, took notice and became excited about the future, which increased interest in the program. Plus I agree with Names in that much value is added seeing a team with better speed and strength from the players side and game planning and scheme on the coaches side.

I understand what you think is improvement with the Colonels and you give direct reason for the improvement to simply playing GCL teams.

I on the other hand don't discount the fact that possibly, just possibly, Cov Cath actually got better because they got better players than they had in 2009.

Look, let's look at Cooper. In 2010 they didn't win a single game against a Boone county school nor did they win a single district game. In 2011 they swept district and won their first district title and got their 1st playoff berth. In 2012 they won another district title(they were tied for first place) and they won more games than ever before going 9-1 in the regular season and then went on to win the Regional Championship and became state runner up. They didn't play any GCL team nor did they play Trinity or Highlands in any of those seasons. The reason they got better is because they got better players.

Can scheduling help a team improve? Sure it can, I never said it can't but the key word is CAN. There is no garuntee a team will improve by playing great teams every week. That is my point.

I understand your take on it, I really do, but my point is teams can improve without having to p,ay GCL type teams. Many NKY teams have won titles without having to play GCL teams since Cov Cath last brought home a title. That is my point.

I agree 110%

That is why I said over the past 5 years CCH has played 7 GCL games and have averaged getting beat by 31 points in every game and is why I said beat downs like that doesn't do much for a team.

In a mud bowl.. CCH was better than Conner that year if the game was played in normal playing conditions..imo

Both teams played in The same conditions so there was no advantage to anyone.

It is a matter of opinion and you are correct. It is also my opinion that Cooper was the #2 team in NKY that year and if they played CCH they would have beat the Colonels. Just my opinion bit it is how I feel.

I am pretty sure this is a Simon Kenton thread not a CovCath thread!!!

Hahaha, you are correct. You have to admit however it is pretty funny when you of all people have to make a post about others hijacking a thread lol

It is, we're discussing the weakness of SK's schedule and how if the Pioneers played superior teams such as CovCath and Highlands they would garner more respect if they were to beat one of those teams. But until the Pioneers step up their schedule, they'll always be no better than 3rd in NKY.

So if you are saying SK has a weak schedule you are also saying CovCath is weak! SK plays the top 4A team! They also scrimmage ST X.

Please just stop- We're all just worn out now and don't have time for anything less than a well thought out counterpoint.

So you agree CovCath is weak?

I think a new thread on the merits of strong scheduling would not be a bad idea.

So you agree CovCath is weak?

No- but I do agree that you should stay out of threads that demand the ability to process abstract thought.

You must have forgot CovCath beat Ryle in the final minutes. SK crushed them!
