8th Region top four?

Featured Replies

After this past week, four teams seem to be moving to the top of the heap in the boys' 8th....

Collins Titans Collins has won 8 in a row, and is no 18-2 on the season and 6-0 in 8th region play. The Titans whipped Woodford 62-42 this past week and edged a strong Eastern team, 56-53 in OT. They continue to be the prohibitive favorite.... This week: big game at Louisville Trinity 2/5/14

South Oldham (14-2, 7-1 Eighth Region) South has won five in a row and whipped Anderson County in Lawrenceburg last Friday, 84-55. The Dragons are letting everyone know they won't give up their crown too easily. Huge week upcoming for South: 2/4/14 at arch-rival North Oldham, 2/7/14 at Gallatin County...the following week, 2/10/14 vs. high-powered Iroquois The North -South game will be aired on Pegasus Sports at The Pegasus Sports Network - PSN

Oldham County (16-5, 7-1 Eighth Region) The Colonels faced a tournament-like schedule last week, with games on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Oldham responded with a 14-point win over 29th District rival North Oldham on Thursday, a 67-58 win that wasn't really that close over Shelby County on Friday (the Colonels led by 20 going into the fourth), and a 29 point handling of Gallatin County on Saturday. The Colonels have won six straight, but they can really make a case for themselves this week; they face Eastern on the road on 2/4/14 and are at home vs. Simon Kenton on 2/7/14. (Game broadcast on Pegasus Sports Network at 7 pm The Pegasus Sports Network - PSN)

Simon Kenton (11-7, 7-0 Eighth Region) SK still has an unblemished record against 8th opponents. They face their biggest region test to date on Friday when they travel to Oldham County.

Others....

Owen County The Rebels are still a bit of a mystery, especially after losing in the 8th region all-A finals. They've won 5 of their last 6, and are 11-6 overall with a 9-2 mark vs. region competition. They have the opportunity for a statement win when they face Simon Kenton on 2/4/14.

Shelby County The Rockets were pretty hot until they mis-fired against Oldham last Friday. I still think this team is trending upward, and they should be considered a dark horse candidate. Saturday's game at Collins will give the Rockets a chance to show it.

Anderson County (8-8), Henry County (16-6), North Oldham (9-11), Carroll County (11-9), Grant County (8-11) need to bounce back, but have the capacity to make noise before all is said and done. Henry has lost three of their last six to Owen, Gallatin, and South..... Anderson has lost 6 of their last 7, and never was in contention against South Oldham. North had pulled itself to 9-9 on the season, but has lost two fourteen point contests to two strong teams, Oldham County and LaRue County. Each has some opportunities against solid 8th region competition in their remaining games.... Carroll County has won 5 of their last 6....are they poised to break out? Grant has won 4 of their past 7, but - most notably - two of the losses were against Simon Kenton and South Oldham in games the Braves acquited themselves well in....

I have kept up with Collins more in this region. IMO I think they will win this region. Is the regional tourney still at Henry Co?

The tournament is still at Henry County. 51 years strong I believe.

South Oldham has some nice results this year. I would think they will challenge Collins.

I wasn't impressed with Simon Kenton when I saw them. Are they just the product of a weak region schedule?

Simon Kenton has only played one 8th region team outside of their district (Gallatin County). They were scheduled to play Collins at Henry County January 25th but it was canceled due to snow. They play at Oldham County on Friday, that should show tell us a little on how they stack up against the rest of the region.

Collins beat South Oldham by 18 when they played at the beginning of the year, but South is certainly their biggest threat in my mind. I haven't seen Oldham play and their game with Collins was canceled, but they could be a threat as well.

I saw Oldham Co beat North and Gallatin this past week ... they are playing well. Coach Z has a nice team. Collins has a been a favorite the last couple of years in the 8th but has yet to win it.

One of THE BEST gyms in the state! Awesome facility. Unfortunately for the 8th, if Hop town comes out of the 2nd, it will be one and done.

I assume the Owen County game tonight was also canceled. It seems like they were slated to play more 8th region opponents this year but the weather just hasn't cooperated.

It was cancelled and rescheduled for tomorrow.

South vs. North Oldham is (currently) scheduled for tonight. Big rivals; a South win gives them the #1 seed in the 29th.

Simon Kenton at Oldham County on Friday could reveal a lot. Really wish we could have seen the Colonels and Titans play.

Both games on Pegasus Sports at The Pegasus Sports Network - PSN, beginning at 7 pm each night.

As for the Henry gym, the 8th has been calling it home since the gym opened in 1963. This year's tourney will be the 52nd straight at the New Castle gym - the longest run of any region tournament at one location.

Trivia: the 1963 winner? Oldham County, featuring a talented guard named Danny Shearer.

How many times has Henry County won the region in this gym? Amazingly, none. Call it the New Castle curse or whatever. The last Henry County region title was in 1962, the year before they opened the big gym in New Castle. The 1962 regional was held at the old Shelbyville HS.

It's a great old gym, with lots of room and the "high school" feel to it. Athletic Director Todd Gilley and the HCHS folks do a fantastic job of hosting every year. I hope they never move it, and certainly never to some big, commercial arena.....

SK goes as far as Taylor Morrison can take them. He's had a great season but these one man teams typically don't do well in region. SK generally underperforms in regional play.
