Aren't the maxpreps rankings based on teams who enter stats on there?

So, Estill County who had all last week off, drops 2 spots to 156....Powell County who came in a 164 gets blowed out by Knott Central moves up 4 spots to 160???

Lafayette beat two top 6 teams, but are not a top 10 team because they have more losses. Yeah, not a fan of these rankings

To the underlined, of course they do, but they also try to cover a huge amount of teams, results, etc., and thus, data. This means they can't provide the kind of specialized/particular information on teams from any given area (i.e., Kentucky) that might interest someone looking for information that would only exist in a niche market.

To the bolded, their rankings are most likely made from a huge algorithm. Strength of schedule is undoubtedly a statistically significant factor in these ratings and would explain why someone playing a "top" team and losing would mean that they move up a few slots (again on a scale of 1000's) while someone beating a "lesser" team wouldn't have a similar effect on that team's rankings.

I actually don't think they factor in strength of schedule properly. Lafayette beat Scott County yet Lafayette is 13 and Scott County is 3.

Good point.

Agreed. No mathematically-based rating system will be any more "perfect" than a subjective ratings system, just less likely to be prejudiced, however unintentionally. However one thing MaxPreps does that schools who play a lot of out of state basketball opponents appreciate is take those games into account. Wayne County has played 13 games, five of which have been against out-of-state teams. Of those, two would be considered top 20-30 in the state of Kentucky, one maybe and the other two, not so good.

Bottom line is that schools located on state borders or who play out of state competition more don't have those games recognized by in-state ratings such as Cantrall or Litkenhouse.

If MaxPreps can't accurately rate our own state within itself why should we believe they can accurately rate out of state opponents?

I hear that complaint all of the time in regards to the BGP rankings. There is no clear cut way to be able to gauge just how good out of state competition is. I applaud teams for going out of state to try to find better competition or to try to improve their teams. When you have a group of people who do all they can to travel across the state to see as many teams as possible in order to put out an accurate poll they are going to rank what they see. That is why BGP doesn't reward or penalize teams based on out of state results. IMO that is the most fair thing to do when a team plays multiple teams from out of state.

Frankly, if you listen to the fans who bang the drums for their teams on here, when they play an out of state opponent, you'd think they had just faced the Celtics. Kinda funny if you ask me.
