Newport Catholic Basketball team paid "huge" compliment

The following message was sent to the NewCath facebook page, KUDOS to Coach Dawn and the team:ylsuper:

....forwarding a beautiful message received this AM --*

To the entire school at Newport Central Catholic,

My wife and I are the parents of three Catholic children in the city of Louisville, two of whom are in Catholic High Schools. Though we are members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, we happened to be attending St. Rita of Louisville this weekend. We wanted to say thank you for making the Catholic Faith a way of Life.

We noticed your varsity basketball team at the 11am Mass. Your team could have met at any time to travel here for the King of the Bluegrass Tournament. But kudos for taking the time and extra steps to make the Mass a part, the most important part, of your journey to Louisville. As fellow Catholics we appreciate your dedication to the Faith. It is important as parents that we walk the walk and not merely talk the talk.

I saw on the late night news Sunday that the team suffered a loss, not quite the message that maybe they had hope to send. But please let them know they sent a far greater message on Sunday. One for the bigger TEAM. One of HOPE.

In a day and age when so many young people walk a way from the faith. When some Catholic schools and coaches don't make the extra effort. Parents can begin to wonder if all the financial sacrifice is worth it. Thanks for reminding us that YES it is.

While we can't MAKE our youth believe, we can HOPE they will see where our priorities as adults reside. Thanks for making the FAITH a public priority.

Vivat Jesus,

Bob and Angela Baker and Family

I've never put much stock into the Catholic education being better overall than the public education. I got a strong education in public school. If you WANT a strong education you'll get it at either place. You can also coast in both.

With that said the reason I chose to send my 3 children through Catholic school is the spiritual side of it. Coach Dawn seems to get it as well. We recently had a mission at St Pius with an outstanding priest from Richmond, KY. Coach Ruthsatz made sure the team got to it after practice. Shows one of the main reasons you're at a Catholic school.

I would assume all catholic school team's do this when out of town. However, even though they weren't looking for it, it's nice to get the recognition.

I think Catholic teams should not just limit it to when they are out of town. At least once a season no reason not to gather and attend Mass as a team in their community/parishes. And that should be for all sports.

A lot of them probably do. I know when my son played football they had attended Mass before each game.

I have visited several colleges with my son that also have team masses.

A very nice compliment to the NCC program.

Including this summer I have had to opportunity to see them play probably four or five times. Now that the season is underway it kinda looks like they may not be a super deep team. I love their brand of racehorse (or more appropriately thoroughbred) style but do you guys (much more close to the program) feel like this may be an achilles heel in tournaments? Especially the regional and state when u might have to play several nights in a row? Do you think they could "reel it in" a little and play a tad more deliberate? Do you think this would benefit them more in the long run?..

Father Jim Sichko ? He is a trip !!!

The best!

Great compliment to the NCC program, but if you've spent much time around these type programs; this isn't out of the ordinary. Having been around several middle school, high school and even some AAU programs that had primarily Catholic kids; Mass is always a priority, even if it's not always convenient. Again congrats to NCC & Coach Dawn for representing the community well!
