Correlation Between Coach Openings And New Redbook Rules

Featured Replies

There are as many new coach openings at the end of a year as I have seen in a long time. Several from traditionally prolific programs. This follows on the heels of the new Redbook regulations regarding fundraising, which make a lot of monetary decisions be placed under a microscope. I am a conspiracy theorist, does anyone believe there is a correlation between the two?

Great minds………..

I thought the same thing. Schools with strong boosters programs will be very attractive to coaches. Schools with week booster programs will not be attractive. The reason? All of the stuff that coaches want now have to be ordered by the boosters clubs, not the "school". The "school" includes employees of the schools which coaches fall under. For example, recently our booster club had to order things for the football program that the coaches normally handle. The coaches will have very little control of the money going forward. Coaches can't even order stuff and let the boosters club pay for it, it has to be ordered BY the boosters club.

If a coach is currently the President of their boosters club, they will have to step down and have a "non-school" employee placed in that position. Some coaches may not be happy about not having the control they want over the money.

I'm going to get some crazy looks here, but while the new red book stipulations have caused more hurdles, it actually gives coaches more of an ownership in their program as far as the booster clubs are concerned.

Interesting. Coaches are, by nature, control freaks. I thought many would not like having to go though their boosters for everything. I may be wrong.

With this new set up they really don't have to. It's all formality really.

More control really.

^^^and, I wanted to see how many times I could say the word "really." Lol

You did a fine job. Really.

Is there a link or something to this? I don't think I am understanding exactly what is going on. It makes it sound like the school can't purchase anything for the program which sounds crazy to me.

Indirectly, yes. Because it is a growing trend of more regulation and hoops to jump through in order to conduct business.

I won't say a lot more, but school funds are a touchy subject around here. I really like our new superintendent, Rick Ross. He is trying to clean up a mess here.

Activity money can only be used on kids not on coaches or facilities. Booster money can be used for pretty much anything.

Tell me that this regards purchases over a set $$$ figure.

"Everything" is a scary, crazy, all-encompassing, statement. Everything over $100, $200, or $500 makes more sense.

Is this football only??? If not, I guess we (Brossart) will have to start a Boosters Club.

This includes everything from Football and Baseball to the Academic Team and School Play.

^ Yes, everything. Band, academic team, mock trial team, you name it.

And all $$ is included, is my reading of it.

As others have stated, every extracurricular activity, including PTA, sports boosters, academic teams funds, ect.

Each sport still gets "Its" money. If football goes out and raised 4,000K selling whatever, they still get that money; the same with softball, cheerleading, boys basketball, track, etc..

The two set ups that I have first hand knowledge of are set up like so (two different school districts/high school):

1) There is "So and So County Public Schools Athletic Booster Club". It' serves basically as the umbrella. (Which includes, a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, etc.)

2) Underneath that, you have each Sport that is a branch. Football, soccer, golf, etc. All of them can have their own support group name, they just can't be called "boosters". Take Football for example, their support group might be called Joe-Town Touchdown Club.

3) Each branch has a "parent representative" that is chosen by the head coach of that sport. This parent rep basically the middle man between the coach of each sport and the overall booster club. (The head coaches basically give those head coaches their needs to take to the monthly Booster meetings & those needs are requested.

4) Coach tells Rep, "Hey...needing this for the boys. Just giving you a heads up." Coach and/or parent rep makes a funds request to the Treasurer, treasurer cuts a check and goods are ordered. At the monthly meetings, all needs, requests, general house cleaning items are taken care of just as they would have if each sport had it's own set of officials.

That's the simplest way I know how to explain it.

The biggest hang ups are this:

- School employees can't handle money anymore. So, there is no more "We are doing a fundraiser the next two weeks, make sure you get your money turned into coach so and so). The treasurer of the overall booster club for example is not a school employee.

-Coaches can NO LONGER order goods for themselves through the booster club or even the school account. For years, coaches were allowed to order the basics...Coaching Polo's, a T Shirt (just basic staff goods) & they could order State Finals Tickets for themselves out of both of these accounts; that is no more.

As far as a control thing, though, there is more for the coaches. They basically get to make the decisions on what's spent where. It's given them more control. It's even better when your parent rep is a coach on the staff; then there are really no hang ups (money handling rules still apply; that coach who is a parent rep bc his son/daughter is on the team just can't touch any money going in or out of the account).
